Im looking at buying an iMac i5, with the 27" screen and the quad core 2.8 processor.

Does anyone have one for PP and would you recommend it? If not, can you recommend another off the shelf desktop?

Cheers

I'd recommend a mac full stop for PP, I use a macbook pro i5 and had one of the very first intel iMacs many moons ago. If you do fork out for a mac, you won't regret it, my last macbook pro lasted for 5 years without skipping a beat (until someone nicked it :( )

Imac has an i5 processor, only the Mac Pro has a quad core, but yeah, as said, Macs are gorgeous and you'll love that led screen, and Aperture is only £45 from the App store.
:)

My 27" i5 mac has a quad core processor. Use it for all my PP Have increased the RAM to 8Gb ( recommendation seems to be 2Gb / core)No problem with large 61Mb files.

Tip insist on a USB keyboard, it's a lot easier to use than the wireless one. They simply gave me the USB keyboard for free. Much prefer it. Magic mouse takes a bit of getting used to ( usually about 90 seconds. )

Hi, I got my iMac 27" i5 about a year ago and since then it's been perfect and without any problems. Everything just runs smooth. And to say that I was a windows user for 12 years this last year with the mac has been fantastic. The iMac is actually quad core.

i have an i3 3.2Ghz imac... runs cs5 and everything else i throw at it.. including final cut express... it takes ages when rendering the video's for output mind.

I have a desktop windows machine running an i7-2600k overclocked to 4.3GHz (on air). It will render 1080p24 video in real time with effects applied. Encoding (2 pass) is quicker than the one pass playback. It is quicker than I am on postprocessing images too. Don't get a mac, get a decent machine ;)

I have a 27" iMac quad core. As standard off the shelf - no extra ram. I regularly have cs5, lightroom 3, graphistudio album design software and various other apps running simultaneously (I'm a messy user!), iTunes or radio streaming in the background etc etc. It's never missed a beat. No delays, everything is more or less instant. Best computer ive ever had. My brother is a graphic designer and has a mac pro with some superfast processor and 8gig ram that cost over £3k. And I just don't see a difference in performance for photographers use.
