as post guys i dont have ps or eliments its a photo my dad has asked me if i can do anything with it its of my grandad any ideas what free programs would help me out with this?

You could download "Gimp" its free and is pretty good.
 
yea i have gimp spike im trying to see if i can bring the people in the photo out more as its very dark
 
The best scan that you can get as a start - it'll never be brilliant, but any photo editor will improve it. But you need to start with a high quality scan.
 
As Phil has said get the highest res scan you can, post it up and I'll have a go tomorrow for you if you wish.

It looks at first glance like you've resampled the original, the largest file appears very pixellated (I wouldn't expect a scanned print to pixellate like that).

Can you have a go at scanning it at the highest res your scanner allows, and not lock it from downloads and I'll see if I can clean it up.
 
hi phil i think its un locked now thats the best i think my my scanner will do its a old scanner
 
its never going to be briliant - but a tweak of levels and a slight drop on colour saturation would improve it

with a hi res original it might also be worth cropping in as the large dark top 2/3 of screen isnt doing anything for it

ok ive had a try but there really isn't a lot to work with, it could do with time cloning out all the specks from damage, if you want me to do that, let me know and ill try later when I have more time.
