Hi,

I've been playing with macro a little again and the bug (I know poor pun!) is back to get one, but I understand they're pretty hard to use so would like to see how hard it really is.

Not difficult to use - just need plenty of patience and practice to get the plane of focus in the right place to give the illusion of DOF. Its more difficult to get a nice diffused light in the right place from the MT24-EX.

It's difficult for a turorial to give you an idea of whether you'll gel with it or not. John Kimbler (aka Dalentech) has a quite interesting set of tutorials on his Deviant Art account and many feature the MP-E

My own advice is that you won't find it easy at the start without an MT-24 macro flash.

Thanks guys, I'll take a look when I'm back on the pc, if I recall last time I looked st this lens it was the additional cost of the flash that put me off, but now I'm resigned to that fact it should be easier this time, all I'd need to do is raise the grand to get the set second hand

That was an excellent link - thank you and thank you both for your advice - I've put up a rather hopeful in the wanted section.

Wish me luck - I really want this combo even though I know it will be frustrating, but ultimately rewarding and worse of all I may have to get up early to get critter still enough to photo :cuckoo:

It was very frustrating for me. I bought one last october (was going to be my xmas present) and then had an accident which has left me with some movement problems and I can't get into all the positions in the garden to get the best out of it. Indoors, for me at least, it was excellent and I used it with 2 speedlites off camera. I managed to get the eye of a sewing needle around 12" long and 2.5" wide. An amazing lens for some amazing shots but if you're outdoors and it's more than breezy you've had it. Good luck with it and I'll look forward to seeing your pics in the macro section, I'll just stick with my 100 L that I can move about with.

This is very true - I've shot with this lens before as a friend of mine has one, and it really doesn't work too well with regular Speedlites. The lens itself isn't particularly difficult to use - as has been pointed out already, it simply requires quite a lot of patience and some practice.

Thanks guys - I'm getting that its a hard lens to work with and will be keeping the 100mm for more standard use, but theres something even harder to overcome it seems - in this case the wife! (Actually usually she's sound but I got a 1DIII not that long ago)

You should see the amount of kit I have the the valuation section (as I can't open a for sale thread as I've a wanted thread open - very annoying!!)

You can open a sale thread (two in fact) so I suspect that you've got some old ones that haven't been archived.

Ah, splendid - I had one open from ages back I hadn't archived... what a numpty!!

Funnily enough I've been looking at the same thing. Sold my 5d and all my lenses a year or so ago to switch to a compact but getting the itch again. I got pretty good results with the Sigma 105mm f2.8 back then but the mp-e and the mt24-ex looks tempting.

Well if you need a 5D again mine just came up for sale ;)

Having to do it a little more on a budget this time. May end up back with a better body but gonna start with a 450D I'm buying from here. I was always of the opinion that the glass was most important anyway ;)

Indeed, the crop may well help for macro too.
