It's time to get some bigger external desktop hard drives. Probably 4TB. Any recommendations or ones to avoid?

Thanks in advance

Gaz

everyone will now proceed to tell you a horror story about certain makes and recommend a particular make. others will slate that make and recommend another. others will state that make and recommend another (repeat to fade).

Youve been here too long Neil :D

Been there, seen it, done it, ate the popcorn etc You are of course 100% correct!

No particular make to recommend, but have a look at Ebuyer.com, they have had some good offers on there recently.
I can recommend the company having bought several items from them.

I know everyone hates them but.... PC World have been cheaper on a number of items I've got over the weeks. Worth a look online :)

I'm using some 4Tb USB3 drives by Seagate:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-STBV4000200-Expansion-External-Drive/dp/B00BP5RL10/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396875486&sr=8-1&keywords=seagate 4tb external drives

They're fast and don't get hot , just warm even after several hours of file transferring.

So far I've had no problems - I connect to them through a surge protected mains power supply, but they're only connected when I want to backup data.

They look like a brick and have a seperate PSU on the 3 pin power plug.

There are only 3 manufacturers of hard disks these days. So you really can't afford for your "avoid" list to be too long!

Budget more and get a RAID-0/1/5/6 capable NAS, any hard-disk can fail regardless of brand, and have learnt that lesson over the years!

Had a few PERC's fail in my time, always been the cache memory though....

Perc doesn't mean expensive any more. Sis have been renamed perc (h200 etc.). The percs are not equal.

Avoid the h200 at all cost if you want performance.
