Yes
I'm thinking about re-visiting some old haunts in London on day trips from Norwich.

Now I have a bus pass and a senior rail card but it seems Londinium Transport (tubes) have
changed a bit. Back in the day they used to take something called cash but I gather this has changed.

After a quick Google it seems what I need is some variety of card - Oyster?

Is this the best option? Which sort? I gather from a website that I can get money off if I register / link my bus pass
at a LT ticket office but I thought Boris had closed them.

Cheers for any help and if you see a pensioner behind a 60D sometime soon please don't kill / mug me.

Hi Steve

An Oyster card will make your travelling round London easier but you could buy a "one day travelcard" when you arrive in London, if you are only going to be coming on a few occasions probably the easiest option.

Pay as you Go Oyster cards are transferable so if you can find a friend or relative with one you can borrow it and top it up when you arrive in London at any tube ticket machine - very easy to do.

Not all the ticket offices have been closed but I was surprised to see most of the ticket windows at Kings Cross closed earlier this year!!

I'm not sure if you can get one if you live outside of London, and what the age limit is, but as you mentioned a senior rail card I know my parents have freedom passes I think they are called, which allow free travel on buses and tubes (after 9.30am I think). Would save you a lot if you can get one.

If you have a bank card where you can pay by holding it over the machine instead of entering your pin number in it (the ones with the sort of wifi icon on them) you can use those now instead of getting an Oyster for pay as you go. I use mine all the time like that - not sure you can put a travel card on it though, that may require Oyster.

I have an Oyster - had had it for years now and I'm up in civilisation :D

I wanted to 'top up' my card ready for a trip down South soon - but though mine has at some point been registered I can't do it online. :(

The advice from the Customer Services was that I would be fine with the balance on mine [ I'd £17 ] and it should cover me most of the time I'm down.

You can buy an Oyster online - and the balance doesn't expire.

Sadly my Scottish 'oldies' free bus pass doesn't work in London.

OH and if I got this correctly all weekend travel on tfl stuff is at off peak rates too

Steve, you would not qualify for a Freedom Pass as, along with the age requirement (which I assume you would meet as you have senior rail card), your sole or principal place of residence has to be in London.

However, as you have a bus pass it looks like you would be eligible for free travel on London buses.

Have a look at the last paragraph of the residency section on this page from londoncouncils.gov site - http://www.londoncouncils.gov.uk/services/freedom-pass/older-persons-freedom-pass/eligibility

If you have a contactless payment card, you can use this instead of oyster and still get the same rates

Contactless has not made it to Norfolk - maybe in twenty years give or take a decade.

So it looks like a pay as you go Oyster card is the best option..

I will be going into London midweek to have a butchers at the astrophotography exhibition at the Royal Observatory. Contactless for me (technology has made it to rural Cambs) used it twice now and all went well.

If you can avoid the centre zone 1 travel is very cheap, went from Totenham Hale to Kew Gardens via the overground North London Line and only cost two or three quid return

Don't forget the 2for1 offers if you go into the Capital by rail, some really good savings to be made, last vist was the Churchill War Rooms. Travelcard is another option, 12 quid for one day all zones and gives discounts on things like the river taxis and cable car

Enjoy my home city, born and lived there for forty years, still finding new things to see and do

Just to clarify - any contactless credit or debit card can be used.

If travelling by rail get a combined rail ticket / underground travel car. If your coming in by bus car, head for one of the Outer tube stations & buy a Travel card from the machine.

Simples :)

Watch out if you go to town tomorrow, I am and just found out the DLR is shut due to strike action, early Thursday will also be affected

Found a new route to Greenwich, two actually, river taxi or overground to Maze Hill, sorted
