Yes
If so, and according to the "what are you reading now thread" (I think), it appears a film is to made of Jack Reachers adventures. Played by Tom Cruise!
Now we know from the books that Reacher is 6' plus with a 50" chest.

So I thought Cruise was a poor choice but my question is, what actor would you have gone for to play the title role?

I thought Stallone is probably a bit too old now and too short anyway maybe.
I reckon Gerard Butler or maybe Timothy Olyphant. Anyone else got any ideas who might have been perfect?

David Morse

Would fit the bill, the right build, can be tough but also human.

Hmm I reckon he's too old now though.

Sam Worthington would have been better choice than TC I reckon.

Yeah massive fan, and I think it's pathetic that they've cast cruise in the role, I've read that it's cruise that brought the rights for the film which I guess is the reason he has been cast for the role :shake:

Yep my father and I (big fans of the books) gave a dejected sigh when we read this a couple of months back. Looks like the movie is based on 'One Shot' and does indeed star the diminutive mr cruise. It will probably be a good movie just don't try to picture the book 'Jack Reacher' and watch it as a standalone maverick ex cop movie. I think if we watch and try making comparisons it will just be a waste of time so why bother.

Actors who could credibly play the role ? Anyone who can get stuff from the top shelf of a kitchen cupboard without getting a chair I suppose.

Film's already made and deep into post-production. Due for release on Boxing Day. BAsed on the "One Shot" novel.
Cruise was his own choice to play Jack as he own the film rights to Lee Child's books.
He's almost a full 1 foot too short for the character it absolutely ridiculous. Reacher is one of the best characters of recent times (IMO) and there must be dozens better suited to portraying him.

Such a shame, a good serious of books, i hope a lot of effort has gone into the film...

Been a big fan of the books for a few years now. I always imagined someone like Mickey Rourke would play the role if they ever made a film, certainly not Tom Cruise

I'm a big fan and hadn't heard about TC doing this....it is a shame as they'll have to change a fair bit I suppose.

Just Googled "Tall Actors" and from the list I reckon Vincent D'Onofrio would be perfect:thumbs:

Love Lee Childs Jack Reacher books. For me, Reacher can only be played by one guy - Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock. Ok Reacher is a white guy with blonde hair but The Rock is one of the few guys hit fit the bill screen presence wise!

About 50% of the cast from the Spartacus series may fit the bill too, most may be a little young for the part though.

It's quite laughable that Cruise would play a towering, barrel-chested man. I might give it a miss so as to not ruin the books.

Tom Hardy, might have to work on his American accent though

one shot was crap anyway - one of the weakest in the series (though not as weak as the visitor)

If you are going to make a jack reacher film it ought to be 'die trying' with 'echo burning' coming a close second.

And as to the casting he needs to be 30s, white, built like a brick shirehorse, and a hardcase - not a pretty boy like cruise. Jason Statham might do at a pinch (although he's english , but that could be explained as reacher grew up all over the world and comes from a place called 'millitary' )

I'm a big fan of the Reacher series and like others getting Cruise to play the part is laughable to say the least.

As to who could play the part? A difficult one but I think Russell Crowe could do a good job (not very tall though), Gerard Butler and Samuel L Jackson also spring to mind.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Chuck Norris.....:D

viggo mortensen could do it,

Hugh Jackman would also be good. Ray Stevenson possibly.

Daniel Craig could do it but it might be too similar to his portrayal of Bond! Often thought the way he plays Bond is how I'd imagine Reacher on screen.

what, as wooden as a wardrobe ? - nah , can't see it myself

Kurt Russell if he was a bit younger

I think he's one of the better bonds! It's not a series I think particularly highly of though.

Yeah I heard that too. Cruise doesn't fit my mental image either regardless of height.

Have to agree there. Sean Penn might fit the role.

Aggh no way! Sean Penn is a decent enough actor but he is a complete idiot in real life and has some completely whacko political ideas. I just can't take him seriously anymore. I see him and I want to punch him. He's also a skinny wirey type so I don't think fits the bill physically, not by a long shot!

Not going to watch the film because no matter how good it might be it will ruin future novels when all is can picture is Tom Cruise as Reacher.

First time I watched Rebus I was disappointed so won't make that mistake again, although I don't think Ian Rankin is writing any more Rebus novels.

Rebus is back in 'Standing In Another Man's Grave' next month. AFAIK, Siobhan Clarke and Malcolm Fox (The Complaints) are in it too.

I read the first Reacher novel and gave up. Not for me.

For me there's really only one contender to play Reacher....Adam Baldwin. 'Bout the right age, 6ft 4ins tall mean looking (not a pretty boy) with previous for playin a badass lol.

Michael Rapaport would do at a push.

Now that surprises me. I thought the Visitor and Tripwire were the best by far. Mind you Ive only read the first 6 and "the hard way" so far.

Maybe I'll go back and get that Crisis 4 book from the charity shelf after all! :geek:

TBH...how good a book is or is not is purely subjective to the individual, and I tend not to take arbitrary statements like "it's crap" at all seriously :)

Diferent strokes and all that - but imo the visitor doesnt work because reachers relatioship with jodie garber is unrealistic and shallow, plus the plot is unbelievable (why would the FBI take on a RIF'd ex military cop to investigate some military homicides - surely current military cops would be doing that, plus FBI have their own resources, plus reacher would already have an FBI file from the events in die trying )

In my estimation it went Killing floor= good (although we've seen the bleached money plot before - for a start its in Robert Crais's Indigo Slam ), die trying =excellent, tripwire= okay, the visitor= terrible, echo burning= return to form nearly as good as die trying, persuader = good action but terrible plot, without fail = good, one shot = again good action but very weak plotting, the hard way = good ideas but not put together very well (its not credible for example that reacher could break the arms of three mercenrys while armed only with a poker - it smacks of needing to reduce the numbers for the final confrrontation but not knowing how), bad luck and trouble = equally poor execution of what could have been a good book, The Enemy = return to form as a prequel, Nothing to lose= very very weak plotting , the idea seems to be getting tired. After that I lost interest and didnt read the next three , although i recently picked up 'the affair' in tescos and that was okay if maybe a little contrived.

The new one "a wanted man" looksd totally contrived and false and i won't be bothering -it strikes me Lee child is running out of ways to get reacher into trouble and thus begining to get more and more artificial - which is why the only ones to work recently have been prequels where he's back to being a millitary cop

The same can be said of the mcnab nick stone thrillers - remote control was good , but then he lost the plot a bit with crisis four and started putting stone in totally unbelievable situations (for example without spoiling the plot he's sent to the US to kill someone but not provided with a firearm, so he tries to use a hunting bow like one would a handgun - totally unbelievable, for one thing i'm sure an Ex SAS deniable operator would be able to get his hands on a firearm (for example reacher mugs a drug dealer for one in the enemy), and for another if you did had to use a bow you wouldnt enter a close combat situation - you'd stay back and use it like you would a sniper rifle).

Child carries unbelievability off better than McNab as hes a better writer so even his poorer books are readable but some are distinctly better than others

I also noticed that he's gone from writing in the third person to writing in the first person in persuader and the enemy. Why would he do that?
I think I'll gve up after persuader and the enemy, although Dad reckoned Worth Dying For was pretty good. And I thought 61 hours had potential but is apparently rather boring.

I want to try some Robert Crais and Vince Flynn one's too.

That's who I always picture when I read the books.

61 Hours should really be read before Worth Dying For in terms of timeline.

Adam Baldwin is an excellent shout

Quite liked some of the Reacher books, hasn't read any after 61 hours which I thought to be a bit naff

cheap shot sell out. Very disappointed with Lee Child on this one. Sold out without thinking about it.

Tom Cruise is an egotistical *******... his whleo style of acing and his physical stature does not lead him into playing reacher..

Having read all the books, I have "my" Reacher in my head and it is most certainly polar opposite to Mr Cruise.

Just as we suspected.....totally wrong for the part. :bang:

I can't watch the trailer without giggling. Little Tom is no Lee Marvin.

all the robert crais books are excellent - but they benefit from reading them in order so you see the relationship between cole and pike deepen. The Monkey's Raincoat is the first one.

(hostage and demolition angel are not series books - but i'd recomend reading deomlition angel after LA requiem but before the last detective as it introduces charecters who turn up in the later series books. )

you'll also notice in some books a police character who pops up very ocasionally but who seems to have no bearing on the story - this is an oblique refference to michael connolys harry bosch books (where you see the same sort of reference to a ferrari driving PI) - its because by chance they have both got their main hero living in LA canyon country and have decided to acknowledge each other

I do tend to read books in published order when I am starting new authors I must admit. And am doing so with the Harry Bosch series. Although I might skip the Flynn first one. Im re-reading the Ian Fleming Bonds on and off and going through them in order also.
OCD or something I expect.

Bosch is a fab character too.
