Hi all,

My wife is thinking of a new camera, and we're off to Ireland for a week in about a week's time.

She's not sure whether she should get the camera here, or try and pick up something aboard, given a reasonable euro/pound exchange rate.

Is camera gear pricey in Ireland, or are there some bargains to be had?

She's maybe thinking of an entry level dSLR or posh compact.

Cheers,
James

Fair point Joe!

And no, we're flying ;)

Cheers,
James

I'm sure I remember reading quite a few posts on different forums from people in Ireland moaning about the price of gear there.

Hope you have a great holiday.I'm from Co.Waterford and I give you one peice of advice buy all your gear from Kerso.

Example

Two weeks ago I received my new 1D Nk 2 N from kerso as part of an order. His price for the camera body was £1920 the best price I could get here at home was £2700

The inflation in Ireland has made everything very expensive, with the exception of the lower tax rate on fuel :p

VAT in Ireland is 21% so dont expect to grab any bargains

Sorry for the late respomse - I've just seen this thread. Generally there's little difference between UK prices and Irish prices despite Ireland's 21% VAT rate - on balance Ireland may be a little more expensive. There are some good Irish retailers, both knowledgeable and competitive. There is also a Jessops in Dublin, but they are uncompetitive and rely on their prime position close to Grafton Street to fleece the tourists. Check out this website as representative of a good Dublin camera shop - www.connscameras.ie

Adding to my earlier post - I am very price conscious and so far have no horror stories irrespective of where I've bought from. Canon camera from Hong Kong - both Sigma lenses from Conn's Dublin - nifty fifty from UK - all bought at the best prices I could find at the time.
