Edit My Images
Yes
Just got an iPad 3 and was wondering is there anyway to import raw images straight from the camera or card reader to the iPad when out and about if yes then how do you transfer them to your pc after

Was thinking when at weddings it would be very useful for backup

Get the iPad Camera Kit, connect the camera via a USB cable(card readers that work are few and far between) and import using the App that pops up.

As for transferring to your PC, tbh I'd grab the data direct from the card again, unless you are using an App like Photosmith to rate them; in which case you tfr via dropbox or WiFi.

I heard those eye-Fi wireless sd cards link up with a free app inc raw transfer

Look at their website for details

Hiya....not sure about RAW files, ie if the ipad will read them but you can get a card reader

I card confirm it does for me on both the d70 and d7000. I shoot raw only.

You can import them in with the camera kit but you can't export them out again in raw.

That is not true. You can connect the iPad to you computer and the raw files will get imported via the dcim directory.

Have a search on TP for iPad camera kit, I've posted a number of times. Link to an eBay cf card reader that you can plug into the apple camera kit. I use it o pull raw files onto my iPad direct from the card.

I would recommend an eye if card, then you can transfer automatically as you shoot

This is correct. I regularly load raw files onto my iPad and have never had trouble getting them back off it.

Probably not a great idea. He's using a 5D2.

If you use Lightroom, keep an eye on the photosmith app. The next release will prove to be very useful. Import raw files into the app on the road, keyword, tag, collections etc then sync up to your Lightroom catalog when you get to your pc

You can transfer RAWs with connection kit (or in case of CF you can put card reader on top). LR should import it normally. But don't count on it. iPads can have a mind of their own. They can't do anything useful with raw files anyway, apart from sending them via dropbox.

I find displaying them rather useful

Except you can't view a raw file directly, what you're seeing is the embedded jpeg....

To all intent and purposes you can, it is not like you have to shoot in RAW+JPEG mode now is it? NEF embeds large/basic if I am not mistaken. So a) there is no conversation taking place, it reads the RAW ;) and b) it is still at a 4,928x3,264 image size...

Thanks very much everyone for your input

if you shoot Canon like OP, you don't get full size preview, only a mere 25%. If you shoot JPEG+RAW, you won't see them separately but the RAW preview again. So you have to shoot RAW, change settings, JPEG, back to RAW. Sounds awful to me.

Ok, I stand correct. He should have bought a Nikon then :D

I used my iPad a lot this weekend to review and process some RAWs off my 5D2, and my conclusion is that it is NOT yet really worth it.
There is no ACR for iPad, so the fact you shoot in RAW makes no difference, as you can only alter the same things you could if shot in Jpeg (basic things like brightness, saturation, contrast etc).
The preview is very low quality, I dont know why... the file size is right at around 28MB for a RAW file, but the quality is very poor when viewed - cant figure out why, but it is, try zooming to 100% for instance and it is massively blocky and low-quality... whereas the shot is sharp when viewed on a PC monitor (I'd put the quality at something like when zooming to around 400% on a PC monitor, its THAT bad!)

The iPad screen colour profile is completely unique, and photos processed on an iPad and then uploaded to FaceBook, Flickr, or even emailed to a PC will look NOTHING LIKE they do on your iPad screen. For this reason alone, I would never process another photo on an iPad.

There are other reasons, but for me, the iPad doesnt have its place (yet) for processing photos, especially RAWs.

For displaying photos that have been processed on a PC/Laptop and then sent to the iPad it is wonderful - and acts as a very good mobile portfolio.

As I have learned in another thread it seems that it is to do with the way how apple "reads" raw but only displays the embedded jpg, and how canon (unlike Nikon for example) then seems to include a lower resolution preview in the raw file.

The plan is to use the iPad only as backup ( eg a wedding)and then I can upload at the end of the day to the pc. So I've no plans to use the iPad for viewing Raws or editing

I use an ipad to show off photos immediately when I am out in the field. I use a camera connection kit (Apple's kit is ridiculously expensive so I bought a similar kit for a fraction of the price from Amazon). Quality on ipad adequate, not great and it does some odd things when downloading sometimes but is generally impressive to give a good idea of the photos taken.

I keep the originals on the card and download those to my PC when I get home and edit in the usual way.

I've a 5D2, and I sometimes use an eye-Fi in an adaptor to transfer a jpeg to my iPad for review during a shoot. But I leave RAW on the card.

At other times I just use the Apple connector kit while there is a change of setup or outfit going on.
