I am thinking of getting a pocket-able compact 35mm camera.

Small enough to fit a small jacket pocket
High quality short zoom lens ( 35-70 or thereabouts)
AF
Integrated flash not essential
Aperture Priority , and if possible, full manual metering
Metering control

Any recommendations, please, on what I could be looking for?

Quite a tall order to get all those things plus manual. Olympus XA? The zoom Mju is automated but has a good lens, can be picked up cheap and is truly pocketable

I know its a tall order.

XA is Manual focus, but I was looking for Autofocus really. I wanted a manual mode with metering on manual mode just as an option.
If thats not available, just an Aperture priority with over/under exposure dial will do.
Mju is Olympus , isn't it? Any particualr Mju model you thought was good. The lens quality and AF are the 2 most important things

I have a 'standard' Mju with a fixed 35mm, owned since new last century, the negs are impossible to separate from SLR images. The AF is quick and sharp, metering almost foolproof. I prefer it to the XA I once had. Recently bought the zoom Mju, weatherproof body off the Bay for £13, also a nice camera though to be fair the 35-70 zoom range is modest and it's easier to walk three paces. There are longer tele Mjus available.

Prices are all over the place, a standard Mju sold last week for the top side of fifty quid. One irritating aspect is you have to cancel the flash-off in low light for each frame, rather than cancel with a master setting but I doubt it bothers many people and is only really an issue with slow film. My Mju resides semi-permanently in a pouch on my belt as a 'never leave home without it' camera. Probably as light and small as auto cameras with a good lens get.

Indeed..... but what I've found in compact zoom cameras (well more P&S types e.g. Olympus 105g) is the sharpness is crap compared to a fixed AF lens.

I have a Mju III 80 and it's crackin'. No manual modes but metering is accurate and exposure lock is possible so there are ways to get around the auto. Lens is crisp as a frosty morning too:

T or TVS is certainly on my list.

Any more ideas folks?

Arthur, are all your P&S sold?

yashica t4, t5 but they are not cheap since "one" photographer still uses them professionally.

but still has no aperture priority i think.
maybe a rollei ?

a good compact is not going to be much cheaper than your G1 . for example - nikon 35ti . still costs a fortune.

trying to find one now as this is very intriguing.

No, I have "a few" left, you are more than welcome to the Espio 115M, no manual though. AF *and* MF is something very few sensibly priced shirt-pocket-sized cameras will have, closest older body to what you need would be the Fujica Compact 35 but it has no zoom (very nice fujinon 38mm f/2.8 though). Look at the Rollei 35's but again, no zoom or AF...

Have you thought about a Konica? Whilst not easy to get hold of and maybe a little bit larger than you want, have a look at the Aiborg. Has everything you want bar the full manual focus (but it does have the close/portrait/mountain thing)... next best would be the Z-Up 80 zoom.

I might not have explained it well.

I am looking for AF only - I dont need manual focus.
What I was looking for was Aperture Priority and if possible, the ability to set the metering manually would be great.

It doesn't have to be older or cheap either. Budget is upto 250 quids, but if there is any good one which is cheaper, that'll be great.

Which is the Fujica compact and the Konica you are talking of, Arthur

Well, that's the Fujica out if you want AF... but your original post says you want it

What do you mean by set the meter manually? Over-ride? Compensation?

I set the Aperture and Shutter manually with a built in light meter. ( Like one used to do in any old camera before Aperture priority came in )

Ah... so you want a camera with aperture priority *before* aperture priority came in then :D

Hell no Arthur, I want the camera to have both Aperture priority and manual metering mode and autofocus ( but no need for a manual focus) ...... :D

So then, you are looking at SLR features in a compact... pricey - T-VS, G2, Hexar range.

Wanna borrow the Hexar AF for a while?

*edit - oh wait, the perfect beastie for you would be the Fujifilm Klasse W. Trust me. Pricey, but more style than a room full of very stylish things with style written on the door.

I have the G1, and want something smaller than that.
Seems TVS or T fits the bill, or the Leica compacts.
Was wondering if there is a cheaper alternative, seems there aren't any.

The Mju and Big mini are 2 excellent options for very little money, but of course, doesn't have the manual metering mode.

How big is the Hexar Arthur, compared to the TVS/T and the G1/G2.

Thanks for the offer Arthur, if I decide to get the Hexar in the end, I might very well take up on your offer.

... but check the klasse w out as well.

Back row: T-VS, Hexar, Z-Up 80, Aiborg
Front: Pentax Espio 115M

Note Hexar has accessory HX-14 flash, all the others have built-in.

I know - actually 2 TVS III went yesterday. Both BIN, one went for 175, the other for 180.

I was messed about by someone on another forum, who was discussing the sale of a TVS II; and then backed out. And I missed these 2 as well. Ah well, I should not have been so trusting with someone, just because he comes on the forum.

The hunt is on; so if you spot anything, please let me know

It's definitely a digital camera, It's a very nice little digital camera, with pretty much every manual over-ride you might need, and I'm very happy with mine, but it's definitely not a film camera. Wish I could get a film camera version of it, to be honest (a bit like my EOS-3 is a film equivalent of a 5Dii )

It's definitely a digital camera,

That's what I thought. maurizio, who worked for me, was a camera connosieur - having been a photographer for the last 45 years.
He told me stories of the time when he used all sorts of cameras - Leica, Contax, Alpa, Hassy etc.
Finally, he got a Canon G10; and he was very happy with it; and was using it all the time when we went on tour to godforsaken places.....:D
Not for me though, i am afraid

Thanks Richard.

I am guessing there are folks with snipers on for that one.

I'll still give it a try
