Any ideas on how to process in this style?

I am a wedding photographer and usually use lightroom for all my processing and photoshop for the stuff lightroom won't do.
I try and be as creative as my skills will allow....but I have found myself a little stuck. I have been trying to work out a particular style for a while without managing it. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on it for me.
An example of what I mean is the photos from Rhianna's new album art.

Can anyone help?

I look forward to hearing from you....

Looks like a lot of split toning, very easy to do if you've got Lightroom - put blues in the shadows and yellows in the highlights. Clip the blacks then lift them using curves... hard to describe in words actually! Up the vibrance to get the red hair etc looking bright while keeping the skin tones normal.

Not sure if that helps! :)

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.... :)

Yes....I thought it was split toning and I have been trying various different techniques to get but I can't seem to get the vibrance as in these shots. The blue (which replaces the black) really zings out. You can't replicate this in Lightroom....or so I am aware.

I think its pretty much a variation on cross processing. As the original film based cross-processing technique was a bit hit and miss, and varied depending on the make and model of the film the colour variations could range from the look you were describing, through to the green/blue shaded version that I linked to.

Just did a couple of very quick edits in Lightroom. Obviously the original photo has a big effect on the outcome of this kind of processing, I didn't really have anything similar to the Rhianna shots, especially not the 'warmer' ones in the sand. These shots aren't totally suited to this effect but I just used them for demonstration purposes :) I think the key is really pushing the saturation of the shadows, and lifting them well away from the black point, further than you think is sensible! These aren't quite there but I do think it's achievable in LR with a bit of time and playing around

1) vibrance slider to keep reds bright without nuking the skin tones

2) skin tones not quite right here but the blues are really saturated

3) there's also a fair bit of lens flare going on in some of the shots, which helps :)

Oh wow! I think I may have just cracked it!!
Thank you Lauren...you inspired me!
The technique you need is...
Do what you said Lauren...but then right click and edit in photoshop to quickly create a TIFF without the need for exporting and reimporting. Then without going into photoshop to same thing to the TIFF to exagerate the blue. Lovely!! :)
Thank you so much guys for your input. This is great!!!

You can indeed. I am away and over hills now I know how to do this. Thanks again for your input.... :)
I really appreciate it!
