Hi

I'm thinking of getting a wide-zoom and have been looking at the Sigma 10-20mm which falls in my price bracket (around £250 - £260).

Can anyone suggest any others I should be thinking of? Maybe from Tokina or Tamron? It's for a D40x so I need one with the internal focus motor... (however, I may be upgrading soon to a D80 or D200 so I don't mind manually focussing for now)

I'm looking now via Google at the alternatives, but your input would be appreciated

Sigma 12-24. FF compatible too, so when you upgrade to a FF body (or even have a go with a 35mm film body!) it'll work fine.

Lol WHEN he upgrades?

I was after a wide angle to try and match the IQ of my 50mm but in reality nothing comes close to it's capabilities!

I went for the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 HSM.

The way I see it is, if you have not even considered getting a FF body in the near future, get the 10-20. The DX format will be around for a long time yet, so getting lenses for this format is fine. Both the lenses I use are DX format, and I don't plan on upgrading to FF for a long time yet.

If however you do have a spare £1800+ to spend on a D700/D3, then get the 12-24. Though, if you are in the market for said bodies then the 14-24 would be a far better idea.

So that aside, I'd recommend the 10-20, because the 12-24 will act like an 18-36 on the D40x. The 10-20 will definitely work on the D40x.
