Any homebrewers about?

Nice. Been looking at longer brew times and trying to balance them with the desire to drink fresh beer whenever I want. So obviously this happened.

Nice set up, think I need a dedicated fridge for the Pinter.
Only got a small one we had in our caravan, fine for bottles, but need something larger now.

For entirely accidental reasons we've ended up with a massive fridge freezer in the garage but only use the freezer part. So it has to stay on but the fridge is always empty. *Was* always empty..... :)

Think i'm going to give the new Dunkel Lager a try.
Always enjoy the darker beers like Altbier and the very dark Kostritzer

The Greater Good are really very good at this. You think "that's it, I definitely don't need any more for a while". Then they produce a sour ale, then a fruited cider, then a dunkel.....

BTW just started the Lockwood Pilsner shown above. It's a really nice pilsner.....but I don't really like lager. I think I might move back to actual beer for a bit.

I'll be tapping a dark matter tomorrow which I added a tablespoon of Vanilla essence and some dark spray malt after some advice on the facebook group, also started another DM in the other pinter on Wednesday but this time added lactose and dark spray malt also as advised on the FB group, and theyve just dispatched the dunkel which will be the next one.

Well that was fun while it lasted.

What has happened to it ?
Dunno yet, but the safety bucket is full of beer. I'll empty it out but my guess is it's split. A lot of them are splitting. Lucky it didn't cause more damage.

So no beer for me next weekend. Also, I'll need to spend some time with customer services....

I'm sure they will be helpful, seem like that sort of company.

Just started a new brew, hoping my Red Pinter holds up ok.
Think I need to invest in a bigger safety container than my current washing up bowl.

They have a reputation for sorting stuff like this out - but I've seen 3 posts on FB about catastrophic failures this weekend. It feels an awful lot like paying to beta test. I really really like their product but they need to sort out the quality.

b****r, yeah there are a fair few reports of this happening, i suspect when you undock you'll find some of the middle of the black cap pressure valve in there :-(

I've opened it up and cannot figure out what happened. The dock is full of liquid that won't come out (i.e. where it shouldn't be) but I don't know if this is how it failed or because it sat in a bowl of beer overnight and therefore flooded. I've filled the Pinter with water and redocked it and left it in a box all day. There's about 2 teaspoons of beer (not water) that has leaked out. So the dock is holding - but at some point last night it wasn't. Actually it was 3:30am

Mostly I'm disappointed that I won't have any of their excellent fresh beer next weekend.

Until it was mentioned here by Donnie I hadn't heard about critical failure.
Not that surprising though considering i'm not a frequenter of any social media platforms.

Perhaps it was a rogue batch of Pinters or more likely poor quality control from far east manufacturers.
They do need to get it sorted out otherwise this rather fine system will go the way of the Dodo.
As you say that would be a shame because its good fun and a decent final product too.

I have been wondering if perhaps the amount of yeast needed for such short fermentation times is excessive.
It is considerably more than I would use for an ordinary spray malt brew.
The increased pressure could possibly be too much for the weaker points of the Pinter causing it to leak.
Obviously this is only pure conjecture on my part, but apart from poor design or manufacture its the only other thing I can think of.

Looking at the tilt curve and the evidence of the Pinter (which appears completely undamaged) my guess would be that the pressure built up so much that it forced the Pinter up off the dock (or made the whole thing flex there) and then dumped a lot of liquid before it resealed.

I mean the real question is why the pressure relief valve didn't work.....

Good point about the release valve and the scenario you describe certainly sounds plausible

It's surprising how many people are annoyed about this. The Mark 1 has issues - there are several things they could improve about the mark 2 (not least some way of figuring out how much beer you have left). But the mood amongst people on FB seems annoyed the TGG have been practically giving away kit for a few weeks to clear the shelves for the Mk 2.

Meanwhile, TGG have replaced the faulty kit shown above. Sadly they couldn't replace the special edition beer which leaked but they offered me a free choice so of course I picked Space Hopper.

Also, they emailed me to say if I restarted my subscription to fresh beer I would get a free Co-Pinter. I'd only stopped because the fridge was full. So a Co-pinter, a(nother) glass and a pack of the new Dunkel for £16 (I had to pay postage on the co-pinter). Shame it's all Mk 1 kit..... :D

How long from cancelling to you getting an email to resubscribe? I cancelled a couple of days ago and nothing.

Just tapped my Bhavarian Rhapsody, looking forward to it, already halfway through my previous dark matter which I added 150g lactose and 150g dark spray malt and it's really really nice.

Tapped our Lockwood Lager last weekend, it was horrible and poured it down the plughole.
Tasted very yeasty, like a rotten wheat beer, nothing like the official description of clean and crisp.

I still think there is too much yeast for the quantity of beer, emphasis on speed rather than quality
Just started a West Nuovo and only used half the bottle of yeast, going to ferment for 8 days, cold crash for 2 and condition for 10.

That will be interesting with half yeast. I've always used the steriliser and yeasts that come in the pack but now always do extended times to be honest.
Gonna be interesting soon as Im planning on doing Go Sober for October so will have a backlog. Have 10 bottles of Dark Matter in the airing cupboard already!

The times have always seemed to me much too speedy and right from the start extended them a bit.
We have brewed beer using various methods over the years and never gone this heavy on the yeast.
The amount supplied would have been what we used for at least double the liquid quantity, quite possibly more.

Hope the sober for October thing goes well, not a bad idea every now and then so I believe.
Must admit I do have a beer every day, always have one with my dinner but usually a maximum of 3 x 330ml bottles.
Everyone's system is different and this just suits my digestion, its all good stuff, none of the fizzy pasteurised rubbish.

Bavarian Rhapsody is our next one up, going to use the Pinter just as a fermentation vessel and try uncarbonated.
Will then bottle it adding sugar solution to provide the carbonation, all good fun.

In theory, yeast can double its numbers in as little as 90 minutes so there's no real point in doubling up the original "dose".

Hmmmm I appear to have ordered one of the new Pinter 2's!

I also got the 30 quid off voucher, but to be honest I wasn't that tempted or at least not yet.

Will be very interested to see what you think of it

I'm really in 2 minds about the P2 - like exactly balanced between buying one and not.

On the one hand, I have 2 printers plus a co-pinter that I haven't ever used. And that's from wanting to brew Kombucha.... I definitely don't need one. And I love the beer from the P1, I'm certainly not enough of a connoisseur to "need" a better taste.

On the other hand, they look cool and I can convince myself one will only actually cost me 50 quid or so (149 - 50 voucher and I can join up and get 3 top end presses for "free" then cancel membership and stick on my 12 a month deal). I have I mean if I hate it then eBay would give me 100 when they are still in short supply, right?

You know what? I I might actually deserve one.....

If you were in the fresh beer club ie had a subscription already you should have gotten a £50 off code.
I'm looking forward to it especially after seeing the youtube video they put out which actually goes through the improvements, should be interesting

I know I deserve one lol, with the £50 off voucher too and the year I've had, too damn right I deserve it (y)

It's really interesting that all the social media chatter is about the hop bottle, but the really cool stuff is in the tap and the improved build quality.

I've invested. In other news, I had another mark 1 fail today :(

The tap redesign is a good idea, should keep the beer in better condition for longer.

Seems i'm the odd one out here, I want to experiment more with yeast quantities before I invest further.

b****r, get onto them for a replacement asap (y)

Yeah - 10 mins on the phone and they are sending out a complete replacement and a new press. They will pick up the old one to examine.

You really can't fault their CS but it's almost like I need to start 2 brews at once to get one to work :D

Just removed the dock from my latest brew (West Nuovo) and seems yeasty enough only using half the amount
We shall see what the end product is like.

Out of interest, why are you experimenting with yeast quantities? I know the amount they provide seems a lot but after 24 hours it probably doesn't matter how much you put in - at most you'll slow down the fermentation by a day.

My guess is they are providing lots to cope with user error (inadequate mixing/low temperature/leaving steriliser in the pinter etc) - more should start it faster. Also, it looks better value and they can use the same mould for the bottles :)

Hoping to make it taste less like its been sat on an over abundance of yeast for an excessive period.

Who knows and to be honest I mainly drink good quality bottled beer so this is just a bit of fun

Bit of a thread resurrection but it prompted me to give the homebrew thing another go. And not a Pinter in sight........
On the left - Hambleton Bard Old English Ale kegged @ 5.5% a couple of weeks ago, on the right - Festival Oak Apple Cider - getting bottled this weekend @ 7.2%.

Tapped the Old English tonight - well happy with the result (think Old Peculiar) - another couple of weeks should see it get even better......

Got the bug now - wine next!!

Started 2 tonight on extended times, a Von Tap and a Bavarian Rhapsody, should be ready for December 18th.
Got my Christmas brews sorted (assuming I haven’t quaffed all the Old English Ale before then!!). Started 30 pints of an American Mocha Porter going today for a January “warmer”

Nice. My Christmas brewing is all over the place. First I lost a week because I hadn't realised how cold the utility room was, then I found out I almost certainly won't get the P2 in time to brew for Christmas, then my beer of the month got similarly delayed :(

But I do have some Von Tap conditioning now and a Cloudy 9 racing its way to being cider in the spare room :)
