Any reasons why I should switch to Canon from Nikon on my next camera buy which I am thinking of doing!

Lol.

I dunno I am thinking of doing a switch. But at the same time thinking not to.

1. Canon are that bit more expensive

2. Nikon D40 was(still is) my first camera

3. I know the Nikon interface quite well now

^ what he said

the only reason to change is if you pick up a canon and think it's better than the nikon, down to you to look really.

are canon actually more expensive? last time i checked the nikon equivs were more expensive...

mind you i don't check that often as i really don't get on with canon bodies

Damn money!!!

I wish I had some to even buy a camera at present.

Doubt my mum would let me get the money out my savings acount :bang:

Not too sure now since price increases, but the big primes were certainly more expensive from the Nikon camp!

Most magazines I have read and most websites I have looked on Canon are the mosre expensive out of the two.

Give me 10 good reasons why I should switch to Canon from Nikon on my next camera buy which I am thinking of doing!

A bit of an odd question. Why would you arbitarily change? There's little between them so if you already have Canon fit glass it'd seem a bit of a waste.

I chose Canon because the 400D suited me at the time, I stuck with it because I had 5 Canon fit lenses by the time I upgraded.

If you've been thinking of changing then you should have some ideas of your own surely?!

1. We will have some used goodies to pick over in the buy and sell forum

2. Canon lenses are cheaper, not that I look but is what I am always reading.

3 - 10 Sorry cant think of any more

"10 good reasons"?

I think the two marques are so closely matched that you'd be lucky to come up with more than a couple valid reasons and they'd really be driven by your main intended subject matter. There are probably a greater number of reasons to stay put.

Bob

What you would gain is diddly squat so I would stay with what you know and use it to the best of your ability. From a Canon User of 31 years ;)

I have thought of going the other way but still can't justify cause I have a lot of Canon gear. Main reason for me thinking of going Nikon is the flash system seems a lot better!

I was being a bit too feisty asking for ten :bonk:

These threads keep popping up daily now and it seems, bar very few who have a good reason, that the OP's in most cases think the change of brand will mean they'll take better pictures. That's not going to happen.

Make the most of the investment you've already made.

Daftest question ever Jordie. ;) Especially so when you're looking for a reason to make the change.

Tis true. Im not looking for the better pitures; but more the upgrade.

Just answered my own question really. Better to be sticking with Nikon I would assume then

And I just answered my question in the previous post I made. :bonk:

What does your D40 not do that you think a Canon (which Canon? What budget) will suddenly make you able to achieve?

Invest in glass and skills.

Nothing much really. Other than I feel I would like to give another make ago from a person being so stern on sticking with Nikon and never wanting to touch a canon (not that bad but you get the picture(no pun intended)

And any Canon I could get my hands on. (cheap budget I would suppose)

But for now Looks like I will be sticking with Nikon

There's not a lot in it really. I'm a Canon user but recently Nikon have brought out some pretty good kit. I'm unlikely to change though because I've got a lot tied up in the rest of the system.

So unless you've got a real need to change it's probably not worth it.

I guess all of you are right in one way or another.

Just having the urge to buy a new camera isnt the same has needing to buy one really is it?

And as I think to myself now, its not the camera I need to be thinking about buying its a lens. Especially as its slowly on its way out (well the focus seems to be)

The D40 is a cracking camera, I'd concentrate on getting new glass if I were you. And practise. ;)

I hate to say this but stick with what you know. Each have their pros and cons but since you only have a kit lens for the d40, get saving some pennies and get yourself loads of good Nikon glass.
I know that the d40 has a limited use of lenses with regards to the af motor not being in the body, so if you were to upgrade, maybe look at a D70/80/90 and then invest in glass?

If any time was a good time to change it would be now while you only have one body and lens.

Canon and Nikon are so similar in capability that it just comes down to personal preference, if you're not happy for any reason maybe you can swap with someone who has a canon for a day or week to see if the grass really is greener. If you find you don't get on with it then you've lost nothing, if you do find out you prefer it then you only have one body and lens to sell.

There is one good reason to change.

Canon have a considerably better range of telephoto lenses if you're into wildlife, birds, aircraft, etc. Nikon don't have anything to match these three:
* EF 300mm f/4 L IS USM
* EF 400mm f/5.6 L USM
* EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM

I have a D40 and still find it suits all my needs. I've upgraded my lenses several times and you will notice a big difference.

StewartR and andrew make the choice easy. Canon have a much better range of lens and so many different options around the same length that you dont have to reach for the same lens as everyone else since it the only option.

I just went the other way, canon to Nikon. Not for any reason other than Nikon had the camera that best suited my needs (the amazing D3), yes Canon do have a good selection of f4 lenses and some of the L series primes are really good, better than Nikon imho. However if you are into zoom lenses the nikon 24-70mm f2.8 and 70-200mm f2.8 VR are slightly better than the canon variety, although more expensive. With Nikon though there does seem to be a large selection of older pro class that can be bought on the cheap second hand, something missing with Canon.

In the end it depends what you are looking for, i have used both systems extensivly and i would probably say that i have found Nikon to be slightly better (mainly due to the 2nd hand market). Saying that Canon are great and make superb cameras and lenses.

I'm new to the world of DSLRs, but from my research, you can't really go wrong with Canon or Nikon. They are the two 'big' names in the pro market if you want to get really serious, and th emost popular.

I brought my first SLR, a Sony A200 last November, but that was a bit of an impulse buy as it was at a bargain price. I then did some proper research and decided to go for either a Canon or Nikon mid range body as I just preferred the handling to entry models. As I had only invested in one lens, it was relatively easy to sell on. The fact that the Canon used CF cards (like the Sony) and the 40D was better than the D80 and D200 from the Nikon range, and the D90 was too expensive, it was the best choice for me.

I have my 40D for almost 2 weeks now and it is an awesome camera and I'm very happy with it. Just need to learn to take some good photos now!

All this arguiog about Canon and Nikon is silly anyway, they're both great cameras with a long history of catering for photographers' needs.

I just worries me slightly that an anagram of Nikon is Noink!
