I've been using gimp for some time but can't seem to add nice texture to portraits to make them have a rustic style look. Does anybody know a way I could do this?
Good luck. As I'm not actually sure of the precise effect you want. Perhaps post something you've seen?
I thought creating a new top layer with a texture image on it, and adjusting the opacity or the mode would do it? But maybe that's not good enough.
I am pretty sure gimp supports layers and layer masks just like PS. That is all you should need to overlay some degrading mess and control its strength (you probably don't want it on the model's face)
Just drag on the texture layer, then on the layers palettte change the blend mode and opacity to suit what your after, and as said above just mask off any thats over say the face or something importand
OK. I tried something out of curiosity. Dunno if it's of any help. Below is an enlargement of a part of it:
1) Create new top layer with 50% grey.
2) Go Menu - Filters - Artistic - Apply Canvas.
3) Use the slider to make it coarse enough. Go OK.
4) Set the top filter mode to "Overlay" and voila!
