My son has just arrived home with his new to him 2012 Ford Transit T300, high mileage Van and it already seems to have some problems. Can anyone help please?

The Engine Malfunction warning light illuminated on his way from picking the van up and has stayed on , although the van seems to drive OK.

The rear cab lights don't go out when the van is locked and probably linked to that, the dash shows a warning that the passenger rear doors aren't closed (something like that) and the horn makes a beep when he locks the vehicle.

He's saved hard for this van and needs it for his job, so we're keen to get it sorted out without too much fuss. The garage has said that they will take a look tomorrow, but as he only has a 28 day warranty and they're a small garage, I'm just a little concerned.

Hi Andy, can't help with the warning light - best bet is have them plug it in tomorrow and it should come up with a fault code...

With regards to the light not going out, sounds like the "internal light" switch is shorting out / not switching properly, hence the light staying on - he has checked and the doors / sliding door is shutting properly ? A mate had a similar issue with the side sliding door not closing properly, although it did look shut, I think the lock needed some attention and the channel the door runs in had something in, which was stopping it shutting as well...

Hope he gets it sorted out easily, hopefully the garage will find and rectify the problems tomorrow. :)

Thanks Andy. We'll see what they say about the engine light when they plug it in tomorrow.
As far as the door warning goes, I can't see any switches around the doors to check? Would this be related to the horn making a warning sound about the doors?.

I think so - seem to remember this happens on my mates van if he's not got a door shut properly. I think the switch is actually in / around the lock in the door - rather than the old fashioned little push button you used to see in the door piller

CLEAN the door tracks, I use silicone to 'oil' the hinges / runners, & a quick squirt for the mech..

That will usually clear it for the door.

Wouldn't the horn beeping merely be an alarm function to let you know the van is locked? It does that on my cars.

28 day warranty on a 4 year old van?! Holy cr4p. Doesnt sound promising.

Like the other thread this week he has the right to reject it within 30 days if they don't sort it.
I read that somewhere yesterday, although I'm hoping it won't come to that. I'll see what my son has to say when he gets home this evening.

On my ford Van the horn sounds when it can't lock all doors because a door is open
It does seem that all the doors are locked, I'm guessing that they're not Deadlocked though.

My son is back home (without the van), the garage guy has said that the engine malfunction light came on because some water from an engine jet-wash got into a valve of some kind? A bit odd though as the light didn't come on until my son has driven several miles, perhaps it took a while for the water to be drawn in.

He's still trying to sort out the door problem, but hasn't found anything yet. He's going to speak to a Ford dealer and see what they say. Fingers crossed that it'll be done for Friday.

Looks positive at present - are they swapping the valve that was water logged ?

Hopefully will get door sorted out as well - looks like it's a bit of a common issue as, as I said my mates van does it, so Ford should know the answer :D

I think my son said that they had changed the valve. I was looking on-line yesterday evening and the door problem does seem to be very common! It's only a 2012 van, but high mileage, so I guess it's had plenty of use.

Engine management lights are a law unto themselves :banghead:
Mine comes on when a bulb blows, car runs ok, always goes out a short time after once the engine has been started a few times.
Never shows anything when it's connected up so no idea what's causing it

That's modern tech for you! ;)

Probably a door switch thats causing the light problem, they are built into the locks they also tell the unit if the door is open or closed, switch is not replaceable they change the whole lock assy.

There should be a secondary memory bank that stores those codes. That is where I found on a BMW I was looking to buy that the 106,000 mile motor had a misfire at about 221,000 miles. Funny that. As the chap was busy with someone else I locked the car with my laptop (with the keys inside), unhooked my cable from the 20 pin BMW connector and closed the bonnet on my way out.

I'm happy to hook it up next time at a meet if you want to know what's going on.

Thanks for the offer but I'm an "if it ain't broke don't try and fix it" type, it's just an annoying light that comes on from time to time

Your choice. The point is that it is broken and complaining about some sensor intermittently. when that properly fails it has the potential of getting costly.

Been doing it for 4 years and passing MOTs so not gonna lose any sleep over it,

Not sure which lights have recently been added to the MOT check but it's possible that your car could fail the next one if it's one that's included...

It passed a couple of weeks ago, light wasn't on at the time, but my mechanic assures me that as long as emissions are ok it doesn't matter, they are well below,
and it can be reset quite easily if needed, but l CBA, just leave it to reset itself, no problem for me, if it eventually goes wrong I'll get it sorted or scrap the car and get another.

sorted :)

Depending what it is, the diagnostic system will only light the MIL when certain conditions have been met such as a certain amount of time driven above certain speeds etc.

Has he got it sorted / any further news ?

Hi Andy, my son came home in the van yesterday evening and the van seems to be fine! Aparently the chap at the garage has fitted a replacement rear door lock sensor. Thanks again to you and the others for the info and advice here!

That's great news. Good to see issues resolved quickly and apparently painlessly.

Hope he enjoys his van, my mate loves his [emoji3]

One piece of advice I was given was never steam clean an engine, they work just fine dirty

Dead right that also a bit of oil keeps the moisture out of your wires. My old citroen used to benefit from a blast of wd40 every so often.
