Any Flickr experts here?

Critique is the way forward it does not help me progress as a photographer if everyone just says

Wow great shot :gag:

Fantastic image :gag:

and this is what seems to be on Flickr. If I choose to I could have 500 contacts and tag and join 100's of groups and I would get lots of fluffy comments with.

You are invited to the 'The most beautiful landscapes ever & ever & ever' and get a big gold star. :nono:

But its cool for some people

Flickr groups are some of the most Cliquey around. There are some great ones, where the critiquing is spot on people tell you honestly where you have gone wrong and offer some good advice for the next time you are out. THEN, there are the, "Love me and i will love you back, cross me and i will tear you to pieces" groups. Since using flickr i have not once thought about joining such a group type, the post 1 comment 3 type groups are purely there for self gratification and to get stats up. And the Flickr awards with silly little logos etc. just get deleted from my comments, they just clutter up the page.

I agree with Gary "constructive" criticism is fair game, but ONLY when done in the right manner, criticism on a newbie photographer can only be damaging to their moral, surely you agree that if no comment was placed and an email sent asking if the Flickr user minds a little criticism was sent, he wouldn't have been blocked from adding comments?

God, I'm a newbie and positively pray for some constructive criticism!

if you dont want constructive crit dont have them on Flickr in the public domain

funny how people dont moan when they get loads of positive comments

I also think 99.99999999999% of flickr comments are totally meaningless

I love people picking fault with my pics , its the only way i'm gonna learn

If you dont want constructive criticism on your photos in flickr, delete the comment and block the user, thats what that option is for, why should any flickr user have to remove their photos from public domain to stop criticism or remove unwanted comments???

what good does it do anyone if all they ever want to hear is the positive stuff

they obviously aren't interested in progressing much

pretty childish if you ask me. He left honest and helpful crit, he was left with a block and a ban. It's pretty obvious the the photographer suffers with extreme insecurity, and an inferiority complex.

Gary.

Constructive crit is there to help not insult, and like Gary's earlier point, people need to grow up and take it like adults.

When I joined here, my first photo set got a lot of construstive crit, and I was over the moon that people had felt I was worth taking the time to give a bit of help.

Getting in a grump and throwing a strop in public by deleting posts that are constructive crit looks very arrogant and childish. I say arrogant, as I think it looks like you feel your above crit and help and you feel your work is wonderful.

That said, its each to thier own and do as you please, but thats my two pennith anyway!

Constructive crit on flickr?? What's that?? I've only ever had that sort of crit in a private group set up especially for a wedding I had done.

I am seriously craving critique at the moment, I've been taking photos for just over a year. I do feel I have progressed quite a lot, but also feel I'm stuck in a rut presently.

Someone please have a look at some on my flickr. If I don't like what you say expect a ban and a huffy teddy bear picture sent to you. ;)

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Let's all pat each other on the back and post meaningless comments on each others photos and block anyone who dares to leave negative crit, and we'd love to have this added to the group!

Personally i would be quite happy for any type of comments good or bad, without constructive crit i wouldn't be able to learn from any mistakes i make.

I get the feeling Highlander Photo is actually Lee-Anne Rafferty-Evans.
Just joined and only posted in this thread

I doubt it! but if it's true then so what?.. I still can't understand why members of this forum can't understand a simple principle of Flickr?..... I.E. It's a photo sharing website  where people share photos and if they don't want critique then it's up to them  I understand the OP's point but try and see it a different way... She has paid for her account, has some excellent shots, has several shots Explored and is doing well as a relative newbie  and if she doesn't want an individual to comment on her shots?..Then that is her choice :)

lmfao Im definately NOT the Lee-Anne Rafferty-Evans, I joined yesterday as this is the first time I have discovered this forum and as I know a lot about flickr and all its ups and downs I thought I would add my pennies worth to the chat. I'm just being objective about all this. I agree feedback is needed, I also agree flickr users that send nice fluffy comments on obviously poor quality photos should be shot, I also find invites to groups annoying, if I wanted to add to a group Ill find you and add my photos otherwise sod off.
All I'm trying to achieve here is suggest a nice softly softly approach or more friendly approach to adding criticism to peoples work who you dont know or have never contacted before, so no one gets blocked and we dont have to go through this obvious witch hunt on a newbie tog.
And THB I would rather be getting your advice on sigma vs tamron lenses, which is the real reason I joined than having to chat about the pro's and con's of flickr.

I agree with a lot of what you're saying but i dont think people were being out of order in the way they criticised her photo , all someone did was suggest it was underexposed and they got banned ! hardly over the top crit me thinks

anyway welcome to the forum

Blocking the OP's comments was, apart from anything else, selfish.

I guess that most people go on flikr to browse photos and read comments, hoping to learn from others, rather than to post on everything they see.

In other words, if selected comments are edited out, nobody else gets the benefit.

But in this case Lee-Anne states she welcomes any advice! Quoted from her profile:

"Well, seeing I am now on here I have taken up photography and very new to this. Any advise would be great!I also go to the gym, and love spending time at home with my family."

My last comment as I've better things to spend my limited spare time on.
