Interested in Coarse primarily but not averse to Sea or Game fishing.

Im just tentatively starting to have a go after many years of not going (wrong time of year really but hey ho). Would be nice to have someone to annoy bounce ideas/get advice off. I have looked at fishing forums but you never know really which is going to be a good one to join.

Cheers

Well it would seem your interest has started just at the end of the brown trout season although Salmon can still be fished on certain rivers until November. Coarse fishing I don't do much of but there is still a large following. Grayling is a good target through the winter months. Don't know where your from maybe the clue is in your name so if your south of the border you would need to get a licence >> https://www.gov.uk/buy-a-uk-fishing-rod-licence
A rip off but one of the pleasures of living down south ;):)

This forum which covers all aspects of fishing mostly fly but also coarse/grayling/saltwater section has a huge membership and more info than you'll ever need. http://www.flyfishing.co.uk/forums.php

Frank: already have bought a rod-licence. Is a fishing licence cheaper north of the border then?

One of the clubs I was in years ago had a stretch of the test in winter, I did catch a grayling from there once, was very pleased.

I realise no ones probably interested but the best fish I have caught have been:

19lb Pike
18lb carp
9lb barbel (only ever caught 4 mind)
2lb roach
4 1/2lb Chub
5lb bream (on a wet fly!)

I tried fly fishing but was basically the worlds worst caster but I like the idea of not having to go and buy bait, just leave some kit in the car for an after work session.

Also I'd like to try either lure fishing for sea fish or float fishing for them (but not beachcasting). Wouldnt know where to go to attempt this though

Hi There are a few day ticket waters around the Dorset aria. At this time of year the fish are starting to feed deeper in the water. But still not to difficult to catch. You could try the AE site to get more info on your local waters. Or maggot drowners forum.

No EA or equivalent licence needed north of the border, no permits need for brown trout either but the closed season must be obsserved by law, migratories are a different kettle of fish thogh (pardon the pun)

Some good catches there any fisherman would be chuffed with.

I grew up coarse fishing in the Warrington area.

Pretty much gave up when I moved to Scotland as it's mainly fly fishing only where I live.

Still do a bit of lure fishing though. No rod license etc - it's just a day ticket and the cost depends on whether your spinning for trout or Salmon. That in turn is decided upon by the size of the lure you fish with rather than the weight of the line ;)

My main fishing these days is in October - either off the pier at Lochaline (Sound of Mull) or at Loch Sunart. Heading up for two weeks this Saturday in fact.

The main mark in Lochaline is the logging pier used to load trees onto boats. The drop off here is 98 metres straight down from the pier. It takes some work to reel in even without a fish on.

Dogfish, congas, ling, cuckoo wrasse, pollack and plenty of bait in the form of mackerel but the star reason for fishing here is that it is one of the few places in the world where you can land a common skate from the shore.

Rich (u8myufo) is a fisherman/angler/drowner of wurrums and has been known to be down your way, Keith. In act, on of his trips nearly killed him!

 Barbel and pike for me,.......although I am guilty of sitting at the odd carp pool when its the river closed season :(

Most of my fishing is done on the Severn, Warwickshire Avon, and Middle Trent, although I still go to the Don and Ribble occasionally

I've never fished any lower down the country than the Bristol Avon at Malmesbury so can't help around Dorset

As for the forums....if you think there's a lot of 'willy waving' goes on here.......you aint seen nothing yet :D

Edit-Actually I tell a lie, I've fished off the beach at Shell Bay a cpl of times with an old carp rod, had a few small bass and a small smooth hound ( I think :D) of about 5lb that I was well chuffed with

IMO, autumn is the best time for spinning for perch and pike.

Sorry, that's the sum total of my advice. :)

I haven't fished for a few years now. Did course and a lot of fly fishing, but I liked nothing better than walking along a river bank or round a lake with just a spinning rod, a folding net and a small box of spinners.

Ondex spinners rule!

Don't have time to go fishing now, used to do a lot of it. Built my own rods too. All types of fishing as well, float, fly, lure, bait etc ... in fresh and sea. Have had 3lb+ mackerel on the fly, fantastic fun. Used to do a lot of match fishing too, both sea and freshwater.

I used to fish regularly, but have been a few times this season (with the missus in tow, asking when I would be finishedo_O).
I only fish licence waters (not day ticket) so they are mostly rubbish, but I have found one where the roach go to around 2lb and the chub to around 5lb.
Back in the day, I caught chub to 6lb 3oz and roach to 2lb 7oz, and if I could fish the same waters today, I reckon I could beat that.
I will be investigating some new waters soon hopefully so will keep you lot posted.
I will also see if I can scan in some of my old photos of fish and post them here (all taken using 35mm)

I used to go coarse fishing mainly for pike and carp
favourite place was Ameys pit near Reading was brilliant for Pike in the 80's, I caught them up to nearly 26lb
I don't go anymore as I got the photography bug!:)

A fair few of you (us) around then which is good. I wont respond to every post individually but thanks to all for the info.

Fly fishing for mackerel - yes I always fancied doing that years ago but assume you need a boat really?
Perch were about the only fish I never set out to catch specifically. Not sure why, I'd love to catch a decent sized one. Maybe rectify that this time if I can.

From the limited reading round etc Ive been doing big roach are severely affected by otter re-introductions and cormorant predation these days so you might not find it that easy. Depressing stuff.
6lb chub and big roach though, nice!

You're lucky I dont have a scanner otherwise Id post a couple of mine from "back in the day" o_O. Taken on a film olympus OM10 with a bulb release most of em I think.

I went to the "chub" venue earlier in the season, but it was all wired off and there were "no fishing" signs everywhere:(. It is a tributary of the Medway, very small but with deepish pools and large specimems of many different species. Over a few seasons I had literally dozens of fish around the 4lb mark, but the big one was a real surprise. It was about eighteen years ago and I always used cubes of cheese with a size 8 hook imbedded in it. The roach was from a day ticket water on the Medway a long time ago, and came from a stretch where one of my mates had a three pounder (when the record was 3lb 14oz).
I think I know where there may be big roach even now, and it is a free water. The only problem is that there are loads of eels, so all baits get taken by them. There are also large tench and very large pike.

Just come back from fishing one of my clubs local waters. 5 chub,4 carp,11 roach,1 perch, Not a bad day.

no, I've had them from rocky outcrops, and even from chesil ... (still day though - was unusual when I'm there!)

I used to use small silver spinning spoons, worked a treat, had them up to 3lb or so, my mate had the north west record for a while years back.
