Hi all ...I'm hoping someone can do me a favour that owns a dji mini 2 drone . I want one for stills only (landscape) and I was hoping someone could email me a raw as I'm slightly concerned the quality won't be as good as I want or need and I don't want to be disappointed after I spend the money

Thanks in advance

It is only 4000x3000 px so you can get A4, maybe A3 print if really pushing it. 4k video is probably the more useful side of it. Away from sun it is just OK, into the sun absolutely hopeless. Bracketing is only -0.7 0 +0.7 so next to useless with that sensor. If you do it manually it may move more than you'd like between frames. It's OK to get started, get familiar but wouldn't consider this a viable pro go to tool. Realistically I will either upgrade to mini 3 pro (want freedom of sub 250g class) or sell up altogether. I'm still thinking on that.

I have stuck some RAWs on dropbox - tried to find a few with different light etc and one sequence of bracketed shots (which I tend to use a fair bit to get some decent dynamic range).

That is very much appreciated thank you

I’ve printed A3+ from my mini 2 without issue. I’ve also compared it side by side with my mavic 2 pro and the differences in the image are negligible at best.
The only time the mavic 2 pro beat it was really low light. Normal daytime shooting on both are on par.
I’ve since sold the mavic 2 pro and have kept the mini2. I’ve also pre ordered the mini 3. Makes life so much easier not having to deal with the EASA rules too. Just fly and get the job done wherever.

Thanks for that ....
And have you been happy with overall image quality? I'm trying to imagine what to compare it to ......compact camera quality......mobile phone quality .........

Are you sure about that? As far as I can see, you have to register and once this year is up, drones like the mini 2 will be restricted to A3 rules. It looks like there's still some confusion around this and still some to'ing and fro'ing around conformity marks but you can't just fly.

In answer to the op, I only have the mini se, so no raw but stills can be good in the right light, however, what I've seen from something like the air 2s, is a lot better. That's a 1 inch sensor. Just do a search on Flickr and you'll see the difference.

As far as my research goes all it seems you need is an Operator ID and when the new conformity marks finally come on any drone with a take off weight of under A1 rules with no further training.

That's what I'm hoping but currently the A1 bit is unclear when flying legacy drones with no conformity mark but I'm reading conflicting views on this and the worst case scenario will be you have to fly under A3 rules. Hopefully things will clarify this year but you definetly need the operator ID. I was planning on doing the Irish one when I need it.

It it all depends whether the CAA continue the mini as sub 250g even though a C marked drone of the same design
weight would officially be over 250g as it’s changing to maximum take off weight from 2023 onwards. The mini is theoretically over 250g when you add any accessories like filters or prop guards but keep under the 250g mark as they aren’t taken into account. I’m hoping as a legacy drone they keep the current weight rules it’s currently held to rather than apply a new weight rule that takes it over 250g. It would potentially make the last mini model under the old weight a very sort after model.

I thought I read somewhere that the CAA regs as they are now say any unmarked drone the weight will be taken as the actual take off weight so as long as you don’t add prop guards etc hopefully the mini will stay in the A1. But that assumes the regs don’t change.

Better than a decent mobile phone, depending on good light.

Look at this way, take a photo of a building with a 24mm lens from 400ft away a zoom into it after.. it’ll look pretty odd. Now put a drone 400ft in the air and take a picture of a building below… same deal. It’s absolutely fine for big prints and more than adequate for web use.

As it stands, you can just fly. I have the a2CofC anyway So either way it makes no odds to me.
The transition period is being extended further as you still cant even buy a c marked drone, so how is anyone expected to use one. This extension is being touted as 2 years probably.. by then the mini 2 will probably be very old hat anyway.

For the foreseeable, a mini 2 is a buy and fly drone without worrying about any of the regulations except for registering it.

Gotcha

If you pixel peep, you won't be satisfied, if you don't, it'll do just fine. I enjoyed mine until I got bored of it, made some alright images. A mate uses his for night time city stuff and gets some fantastic images. It's all about learning it's limitations and working within them and you won't be disappointed, push it too far, and like anything else, you will be.
