It's a long shot I know, but do we have any qualified dermatologists within our midsts?

I need some advise if possible please, but it is vital that it is clinically correct information, so willing helpers who went to see one once need not apply (thanks all the same though :D).

Can you either raise your hand here in an orderly fashion and I'll PM you, or drop me a PM directly please?

Many thanks in advance

As a doctor (not a dermatologist) I would be very wary of giving advice over the internet. Its always best done in person and with ssomething to look at/examine. I think you will find most doctors will think the same.

Sorry I can't help!

Thanks Jim. It's not a diagnosis I'm after more clarification on whether a particular product falls within a certain criteria or not if that makes sense?

If a medicine is a certain class or not? It does make sense. I may actually be able to help you there. I work in the regulation side of things and could look it up for you. PM me if you want.

Sent something back.

Just a quick comment- I am not offering any medical consulting services online! If in doubt go and see your GP! ;)

Thanks Jim. Just to reiterate what you said so that you don't get bombarded, Jim's help was NOTHING to do with diagnosis or treatment, so don't be bugging him!

Call NHS Direct instead!

NHS direct?!?!?! I will keep my thoughts to myself on that subject!

I find them very helpful

"I have something wrong with me *explain symptoms*"

"Hmm, well you ought to go and see your doctor then"

Cant fault their advice.

Hmm!! To get to see a Doctor nowadays one has to get past the machine-gun nest at reception.................................

"Can I see a Doctor".........Receptionist "is it an emergency" "well,I think so "......."whats wrong"........."it's rather personel"............"but is it an emergency"........."Ok, I have found this lump in my groin".........."does it hurt ,or is it bleeding"..........."no and no ".............."so can you come back next week,we are rather busy"................I would rather see someone today if possible"............................... " Oh,well. Is it an emergency".................................ARGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:bang:

Sounds like you need to go to a different surgery.

Glad we are not the only ones with Hitler trainees for a receptionist. Despite our boys notes stating must be seen immediatly (genetic condition with multiple slow growing brain tumours) it is surprising how many times we have to argue to see our GP:bang::bang::bang:

GP receptionists are bred to do that from birth. They are not that much different all over the country. Unless you are a doctor, then they just book the appointment! ;)

Having been a medical secretary and receptionist I have to say they are in a very difficult position.
Doctor says "NO more appointments, we are fully booked today unless it is an absolute emergency"
Patient says "It is an emergency" Receptionist is not qualilfied to disagree even though the patient is not actually dying and so gives them an appointment to shut them up
Doctor then has a go at receptionist.

Receptionists cannot win as both the doctors and the patients have a go at them.

When offered a "how about a week on Thursday", I always ask for the receptionists name "so my family know who to sue when I drop dead", I then get " would 10.30 this morning be OK ?"

Funny thing is when you want an appointment for a week on Thursday, you have to call in the day before .

I'm sure they have pressures we know nothing about.

The life of a GP surgery is very complicated and its not a job I would ever want to do. I have many friends who are GPs and quite frankly good luck to them. As Christine says the big problem is not knowing what an emergency is. Patients certainly don't.

Lets just say doctors (and this one in particular) get very annoyed when you come to A&E at 3am because you can't get your false nails off. One of the many reasons I left clincal practice!

menthel - i would love to hear your comments on NHS direct if you care to share.

I'm not sure I have much to say apart from the fact that when I was still working in the NHS their use of proformas and not seeing the patients was generally frowned upon. From what we could work out all they were was a directing service, telling people whom to go to so they could get a proper answer. They often seemed to get that wrong. I think it may be one of the services that could go in the era of cuts, or at least change greatly. As I have said I no longer work clincally and have not for nearly 4 years, so all I have to go on now is what my friends (doctors and nurses woring in both hospitals and GP/community) have to say!

I currently work at NHS direct but i have 8 years acute experience your right we are a directing service in a about 40% of cases in the other 60% of cases we advice patients on how to manage there symptoms.

and yeah we get it wrong proabley a lot of the time but for many of our patients were the last resort and it says alot about the NHS that people can't see there own gp on the day they would like to.

Were also paid by some other nhs services to triage there patients for them. which cuts down on the ooh doctors work cos as i said 60% of our caller get home care advice.

And im not having ago just we are seen as the scum of the NHS but we save it a fortune.

I wasn't having a go at you but at the system, but then again I have not worked within it for nearly 4 years now and for that I am thankful.

i wish i could get out tbh but where the hell do i get a job that pays 30K a year and gives a good pension, being able to triage patients, plaster cast and apply skin glue doesnt have much use out side of nursing :(

Pharma? You would be surprised how many ex nurses work in industry! ;)

yeah its a thought not too keen on that either though - maybe i just need to win the lottery and give up work.
