Any Corel AfterShot Pro users out there?

I've done a search of the forum, and have found little mention of Corel products in general, and AfterShot Pro in particular. I'm using PaintShop Pro X4 and have just begun having a go at processing/editing RAW files; the RAW facility on PSPx4 is pretty basic and I'm having a lot more success with the NikNX2 bundled in with the new camera.

I'd like a RAW editor with a few more features and was just wondering if AfterShot Pro is worth considering as an alternative to the more expensive Lightroom. A quick google at the available reviews rate it as good value for money, with my limited budget this can only be a good thing. It's difficult to get a review of any PP software that isn't the more expensive Photoshop and takes it on it's merit. So, I would be interested in getting the opinions of any users of AfterShot Pro please.
 
Thanks for the reply, makes sense to try before you buy.....should have thought of that, will download the demo and give it a go!

I noticed on the amazon page that it was released on Feb 2112, with most Corel products being updated annualy it may be worth waiting a month or so to see if the same happens with this. If a newer version has no major upgrades this version should be had a bit cheaper.
 
AfterShot pro is the worst laid out, most bewildering piece of software I've ever used. It's terrible IMO. I tried it because it had lens distortion correction features that PSP lacks, however that's all I used it for as trying to do anything in it was painfully slow, buggy and marred by constant crashing.

Get Lightroom, far better!
 
Thanks for the input Richard, I did notice that an upgrade to version 1.1 was available to owners of the program, just wondering if you have this and if it made the program easier to use?

Does the latest version of Lightroom run on XP? I've yet to upgrade to Win7 due to other programs I use having compatability issues....you've gotta love Microsoft and their cavalier attitude towards the customer for that one!
 
Can't say about improvements in new version, I haven't bothered to reinstall on my new laptop!

Equally can't say about LR as I never had that on my old laptop (which was XP, new one is 7)!
 
Well, downloaded the AfterShot trial, lasts for 30 days so plenty of time to try it out.

I have to say that on first impression it is just the sort of thing I'm looking for, no problems regards lag or bugs....so far. The speed of the thing is blistering compared to NikNX2, changes made on the slides are just about instantanious in most cases, and converting files to jpeg takes just over 2sec.

I dont have a large collection of RAW files to play about with, mostly snap type pictures of family, but I'm impressed at the amount of PP you can do with the files. As a newbie to all things RAW I didnt find the basics of AfterShot bemusing, I suppose having no experience of other programs helps in that respect; that said, I've yet to try the layering/selective editing bit, suppose this is the e-version of dodging/burning.....being a bit of a luddite with new software this may take some time.

Looks like shooting in RAW is the future.
 
I've used Aftershot Pro for a long time. I bought it when is was called Bibble Pro.
Aftershot Pro one of the best, if not the best, raw-converter under Linux.
Even large amount of raw files (300+) is handled. Only batch editing of many raw files has some lag.

Light/color adjustment, noise handling and other simple editing is pretty good.
Serious editing like cutting, cloning and layering could be better.

.... and I'm still waiting for support for Nikon D600 ;-(
 
I'm a very happy AfterShot Pro user. Don't worry about waiting for upgrades, there have been a couple in the year I've used it, and I've been upgraded free of charge.

Thanks for the additional comments, have seen it on amazon under £60, so will be getting an order in for it. Can get AfterShot and the newer PSPx5 for the same price as Lightroom.....on my budget a no-brainer!
