Yes
I am looking to have some carpet fitted to a new set of stairs to a loft conversion I've been working on. I have used a carpet fitter loads in the past but he is getting so busy now he's quite unreliable so I'm looking elsewhere.

I have been given a price of £100 by another company but I'm struggling to get others to quote (I guess everyone's busy). Can anyone give me an idea of how much this should cost?

I have a set of 6 straight stairs to a 2sqm half landing then another 5 stairs to a small landing at the top (1sqm). The carpet has been bound to be used as a runner so no bullnose to be carpeted and the stairs are straight. I have already fitted the carpet grippers and underlay and I have the carpet all ready to go.

I know stairs are a pain to fit but at this stage where a lot of the prep work is done, for £100 I'm considering doing it myself, is that expensive or does the price seem pretty reasonable?

Would appreciate any help with this

As you've done so much of the job yourself, you haven't left a fitter the opportunity to make a bob or two on the extras. I would have thought £100 was a good price, or like you say have a bash your self. Personally for that price I'd let the fitter do it.

Stairs are a pain - having watched the fitter fit the carpet in our living room and then the stairs - I'd say I was happy to tackle a bedroom (smallish room) where as I wouldn't touch stairs - I think it's worth paying someone to do.

What would your carpet fitter you've used lots charge you do it ? Does he not know / could he not recommend anyone to you ?

Thanks both, I get that I haven't left much room for profit but getting the fitter to do the easy stuff is also surprisingly expensive.
The fitter I used to use is non responsive nowadays so I don't know what he would charge.
I've since had a quote for 80 and another for 70, not a massive difference but the cheapest comes recommended so I think I'll go with him probably.

Clearly stairs are a lot more than rooms as we had a 24sqm room done for £28 carpet only.

This accounts for a lot - if he was the dearest at £100, for the sake of £20, I would go with someone recommended - at the end of the day, this is something you are going to look at / everyone will see on a very regular basis, so it needs to be right...And they'll also make sure the carpet is fitted in the correct direction (something to do with the pile).

Hope it works out :)

Yes I've heard something about that too. Definitely happier with someone who's done work for a friend in the past as well.

Thanks

I just had 5mt x 2mt hallway, staircase, landing, staircase to loft and loft landing done, plain on flat surfaces and stripe on both sets of staircases, total 40sqmts, fitting was £2 sq mt so £80, everything was already rodded and underlayed
