Hello all,

Complete off topic but I thought somebody here may know the answer...

I have a Panasonic TH-42PZ80B television and an Onkyo Onkyo TX-SR606 A/V amp. I'm pretty sure that the answer is no but is there a way to use the TV speaker as the centre speaker for 5.1 surround sound?

How are you getting the tv picture, i.e HDMI or comp? if comp then id suspect possible but then you'd be losing some picture IQ over HDMI if you have a 1080p source as as the Panny doesnt support that media via componant connection.

Not overly sure why you'd want to use the onboard speakers though if running a av set up, as the onboard speakers are pretty poori use my setup as 2.1 for normal tv, and full 5.1 for films, i never use on the onboard speakers as they sound crap. Brill picture though.

Thanks Russ

It is not for the main A/V system for which I'm using the same amp with a 50" screen and a Mordaunt Short 5.1 Alumni speaker package.

This is just for the family room where I am using front and back speakers I already have and the wife does not want the centre speaker attached to the wall. She has bought a unit that doesn't hold the centre speaker either so I am going to have to probably do without a centre speaker and make sure the Onkyo Amp knows that it is not there.

I guess the Amp will compensate for the lack of centre speaker by directing more of the dialogue to the front speakers?

The other option is returning the amp and leaving that room with just the sound from the TV.

I see, tbh i am not sure on what that amp can do, i know some mine included will as a 2 channel negating the need for a centre speaker. No harm in trying wothout the centre speaker see if the sound is better then standard tv speakers.

With my Sammy and Denon amp, the source is supplied via HDMI from the freesat box to TV, audio from TV to amp via coaxial, and I have to state that in the setup. If I press volume up on the TV remote, it comes up "option not available", which would be correct. If however you use component out or optical out from the freesat box to amp, as well as HDMI to the TV,whether or not you get a split audio signal, I am not sure. If you do get a split audio signal to both TV and amp, you just enable the sound to the TV and use that as a centre speaker.
