Anyone have any tips getting rid of an ants nest under our patio slabs .

The ant sprays are effective, Spray them heavily at every point they pop through the slabs.

Just sprinkle ant killer through all the gaps in the slabs. Or if your realy bored sit there with a shoe a kill em one by one.

Well I sprayed turps and set it alight ,seem to work ,but then i noticed the buggers gathering this evening ,maybe try petrol tomorrow lol .

The problem with turps etc. is that it's unlikely to completely destroy a nest, just frazzle some of them. Nippon make (or at least used to) a poison that has a syrup like consistency that you put in a little container that has several little holes for anty to get in and out. The "syrup" attracts them, they take it back to the nest to feed everyone which should actually kill off the nest.

The powder is also very good. Put at any entrances to their nest(s) you can find. (If you're unsure, look for little piles of dust/spoil with a hole in) The earlier in the year you find the nest and treat it the less likelihood of them having time to send out winged ants to establish a new nest.

I have loads in my garden to even found an open nest in the shed all the eggs and larvae where all in a pile on one of the beams at ground level
They got a good sprinkling of powder but will check tomorrow if they are dead or not

Why Kill them? We have a few nests in our garden, I have still yet to find a reason why I need to destroy them as they are not bothering me. They are a natural food source for birds and other creatures, if I drop any relish from my burger they will clean up after me :D

Insects (with the exception of wasps) are all good stuff for pollinating etc / food chain...

Why do you feel the need to get rid of?

Don't want them coming into the house simples, plus our grand daughter plays in the vicinity of the ants .

I think poison is your only answer, the workers will then take it and feed it to the Queen, until shes gone more ants will keep hatching so it's pointless burning them etc.

I do it so my little boy can play in the garden and not get covered or bitten by ants

We had a problem with ants coming into our home over two years from a nest that was between paving slabs and the exterior wall of our property.

Initially they got into the kitchen, going for the fruit bowl and crawling all over the worktops and cabinets. We tried cleaning off the worktops with vinegar and always making sure there was no over ripe fruit in the bowl but still they kept coming. The following year the same problem in the kitchen as well as finding them wandering over the walls in other rooms. That was when we tried using the powder but we'd probably left it too late for that year as there were also flying ants about.

The following year we put down the "syrup" poison and sprinkled powder around the suspected nest entrances in late spring/early summer and the problem was solved.

Honestly, it saddens me. Insects do so much good... (with exception of wasps) ... yet people feel the need to kill....

The best way to do it, if you feel the need to do it is fire.

I have used Jayes fluid with water either sprayed on or used in a watering can. Works for me. It also cleans your slabs after a week or so as the Jayes seems to kill the mould/mildew on the slabs that blackens them over time.

Wasps are great pollinators. Where would we be without them? As for the ants you could re home them. The deposit might be a Barstood and finding a 34,000 bed home might be a push but worth a crack. :D

They are, but they are evil....... bee's better pollinators and friendly.........

I have no problem with bee's sitting on my skin, clothing etc but wasps... :gag:

Ant killer is easy to get ahold of, it's something to get rid of the other one I need now.....

When will you all wake up and realise you aint going to win :lol::rules: Ok so you kill them, what happens next? Do you think that`s the last you see of them? They will be back and you can go waste your money on some more of that powder poison or whatever method you use. Not difficult to see why an Ant has more Brain power than a human is it? You only have to Google to see how much we can learn from them, but no let`s kill it instead. While you are at it why not educate your grandchildren about the wonders of nature instead of destroying it

Boric acid mixed with golden syrup near the next, the ants which gather food will eat it and take it back to the Queen and others to eat and all will die. I don't usually kill insects but ants got into our kitchen (nest under the floor), and regardless of how clean we were they would still come in. This is the only thing which helped stop them.

You've obviously never had literally thousands of ants crawling all over your kitchen worktops / cuboards / fridge.....or traipsing across the sofa, or over YOU when you're minding your own business. Are you suggesting we all just allow them to move in?

I'm all for leaving these (and other) blighters to thier own devices, but when they start the wholesale home invasion I think it's perfectly acceptable to take a stand and eradicate.

I'm with you Ruth, outside they can do what they like but inside is my turf! :D

No I have not had thousands of Ants crawling over everything. If your case was as bad as you make it out to be, or anyone else who infested with them, then you have to ask yourself this. What are they doing in there in the first place  Ok so you get one or two mooching about the place no probs, let them find a patch of dried spilt fizzy drink or food of any size and description on your floors and it will be " Ho Hi Ho , Its Off To Work We Go!! " Cleanliness is the answer to prevent 100`s or 1000`s entering your dwelling. Ants will very rarely build nests inside the house :rules: ;)

Well now you're just wandering into the realms of utter BS.
I keep a clean house, and a well tended clean garden which tend not to use to eat and drink in) but that did not stop ants setting up a colony, like the OPs case here, right underneath the top patio. Bear in mind that an average ant colony in the UK can contain several million ants over a season.

So, apart from keeping ALL doors and windows sealed closed all through the summer, and keeping all food and drink out of the house altogether (because if you think it needs to be in the open to attract them, you're even more delusional that I suspected), what would you have suggested I do to prevent them coming into the house?

Please, I'd love to hear the hippy tree-hugging solution.

What I have given you is some valid reasons why I am serious, perhaps you would be so kind as to explain why I am not instead of closing the thread? But like I say they will be back and you will doing it all over again in a few months ;)

Right now I am experiencing the attack of the flying ants. Millions of the little beggers all taking to the skies.

This was taken about 30 minutes ago:

Are these the same as the 'flying ants' - which were actually termites - we had in Africa? Used to rise like columns of smoke after heavy rain. They were wonderful.

Just found a hedgehog in our back garden!

Cor I'd be worried if they were actually termites as apparently they eat houses for breakfast!

Oh this forum, how I love you :D

Just waiting for someone to say ant invasions are worse than when the Germans try and this thread is complete!

Oh that's genius...
"I wish, I wish I wish....."

They can be pretty destructive, but they're not as bad as the ones we called white ants. The swarms were usually the same sort of termites that build the huge 'anthills' you sometimes see in wildlife films in Africa.
