Just a quick question. As the proud owner of a new ( end of line & heavily discounted at Tesco) laptop I now need some anti virus software.

Does anyone know of any good deals at the moment?

Thanks in advance

John

try avast home or avg they are both free and seem to work ok. search for them and download for FREE!

Avast are good, and do a free home version that's adaquate unless your really into tralwling porn sites or bit torrents.
:)

Hi John

AGV Free is as good as anything, Ive used it happily for over 5 years and never had a single infection, i have picked up the odd virus but AVG caught it and dealt with it before any damage was done.

If you have a look at Avira, it is one of the best out there, it is free but for detection rates, it beats most paid programs aswell as the free ones, has been one of the best for a while. Very light on resources, and fairly user friendly.

Also, another good program to have is malwarebytes anti-malware. It doesn't offer realtime protection but is good to use once a week just to give the system a test, picks up on things that antiviruses may miss. This can be used with an antivirus as it only runs when you want it to, and won't interfere with any AV's running.

I use avast free. Its good. I didn have avg but it started to mess up so i got rid

You can get Norton Internet Security (stronger firewall than windows) & Anti-Virus from ebay for around £12, cheaper than PC World who are asking 3x the price !
The registration key is cosha  his addy on ebay is - onlinedealsit

avast picked up a few nasties that AVG and sophos missed for me.

and dont bother with firewall software.. the windows one in conjunction with your routers will do the trick and use less resources.

One of the best rated anti-virus applications on the market is Nod32 from Eset. If you want piece of mind then I'd recomend this.

I can't even put it into words how awful Norton is. A good firewall & not opening dodgy emails + firefox is a pretty good start, though I do like AVG.

Norton = bag of poo

Unfortunately a very old attitude that no longer applies.

Below are some quotes from reviews

What this all adds up to is that Symantec made a big step forward with Norton Internet Security 2009. This is, surprisingly, the type of thing that might win over some of the people who have learned to hate security software packages. It’s a great upgrade from the options that come with Windows (firewall, etc.) and, because it is so extensive, should win back some of the free antivirus crowd. At $70 (for a one year license) it’s not a cheap purchase, but you get a lot for your money and the fact that this is the least annoying, lightest weight security package you’ve probably ever used should count for something.

The first thing you need to know about Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2009 is that it's fast. Symantec has spent years working to shed its reputation for sluggish software, and its latest effort sets new standards for responsiveness. Click on the System Tray icon and the main interface leaps up in a fraction of a second.

It's lightweight, too. We used a bare Vista system that took 35 seconds to boot to an idle desktop, with memory usage of 475MB. Installing Norton increased boot time by just six seconds, and raised the RAM footprint by a mere 22MB. Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 eats 15MB more.

Yet another vote for Avast, and this time not the free version. I have the WHS home pack, which covers all home PCs and my server (WHS). A good solid product.

PsiFox - you can find good reviews about any large product- including Vista & Windows ME for example (both horrible products, in my opinion). My opinion about norton is just that- my opinion.

Check out vipre. It doesn't hog system resources and it's fast. I got a home licence for £30 that allows installation on all the pc's we have in the house.

I use Kaspersky, absolutely superb, never had a problem with it and it does loads if you get the internet security package.

I just bought a 3 user 1 year job from Amazon for just over £20
