Anti Lomo/Pro Lomo?

For all those who have an interest or understanding or dislike in Lomography, here's the place to say what you think!

I am currently writing my Dissertation about Lomography looking at them being pioneer's of fun/abstract photography producing innovative cameras, promoting all aspects of photography versus them being a heavily targetted marketing company aimed at a very specific type of person producing poor quality cameras.

What ever your opinion is on the matter, it is of particular interest to me and would help my work immensly. Whether you love or hate them, please let me know what you think and why you think it, no opinion is wrong as it is yours and your entitled to feel the way you do!

If possible i would greatly appreciate if this did not turn in to an argument about Lomo, i'm looking for YOUR personal opinion for ME.

So don't hold back, any thoughts or opinions you have lets here them i really am interested. All quotes used will be referenced in my dissertation so you will be credited for your opinion.

So your dissertation is about other peoples opinions of Lomo and not about the product itself?
 
No. As a dissertation is an argument i am looking at the argument between Lomo and their Lomographers versus those who are anti-Lomo. There is a big divide between those who swear allegiance to Lomo compared to Photographers who hate the products and what it is the company stands for.

For my dissertation i have to provide my argument for which case i support but it needs to be backed up by insight and relevance by those who agree with Lomo, and also the opposingcounter group. I have to provide a balanced argument so i need opinions from those who sit one both sides of the fence.....hence the thread.

If you have an opinion on the subject then please comment, it would be most appreictaed.
 
interesting, something id looked into briefly a few years back before i got really interested in photography. I don't know a lot about it but having just spent 5 mins surfing the web on it first thoughts are....

some cool images, some crap, looks like fun! An easy and accessable way for people to be creative with photography without necessarily an in depth understanding light etc

I'd definately not say im anti it, in fact looks like fun.

maybe im missing something?

Having said that the motta is "dont think shoot". I definately get the impression theres a lot more thinking going on than the motto may like to admit :-)
 
Poor quality cameras?

Do you mean cameras with deliberately poor optics? or poor build quality? you can have one without the other and the former may be significant in one person's assessment and not in another.

Me - I first came across the idea of Lomography in 202 when I visited my brother in Wellington, Aotearoa. He was of the opinion then that it was expensive because of the cost of film and wet processing.

Is it a marketing gimmick? probably, but then a market will support a price for a given prduct, so are the Lomo people wrong to market at a high price if people will buy their gear? I don't know. I wouldn't buy it but someone else obviously would.

Are the products deliberately bad? well yes, of course they are. Somehow the Lomo became popular for the distorted view of the world it presents. No doubt the corporation could make 'better' cameras, but chooses not to. Good luck to them.

Is Lomography fun? well I don't think it is enough fun to spend a huge amount of money on, but then someone else might not call kite flying fun - you can spend more on Kites than on optics relatively easily (not that I have, but it is possible)!

You will have to be careful not to let the dissertation slide into a discussion about the workings of the free market but good luck anyway.

I'm aksing others opinions, not giving mine. This is for two reasons.

1. My opinion is irrelivant to the nature of this thread.

2. I don't want my opinion to either sway someone else's or to create an argument that puts me under personal attack, as this will diminish the importance of that persons opinion to me.

I just need personal unbias opinions from which i can take relevant information from.

looks like fun to me, not really sure why you need poor quality camera to do it thought, you can take snapshots with any camera.
 
I can understand that some people dont want the technical side of things but at the end of the day I feel taking snapshots with a camera thats intentionally bad and calling it art does nothing for me. It would fall into the same catagory as snorting some paint and sneezing over a canvas, I dont find it artistic and doubt anybody could change my mind.

Photography to me personally is a merging of artistic talent with technical excellence, remove the technical part and its just random stuff with pretencious people claiming its art for reason X.

All imo of course.
 
Ihave a mixed opinion with a great deal of Lomo stuff, there are some excellent images & as Robbys82 says, there are also some terrible images - this is obviously subjective though as the same can be said for any style/type of photography.

I like the high contrast & light leak effects & if the technique is controlled well then I think it can give some excellent results & for this reason I think I'm more pro-lomo :lol:
 
hmmm.. tbh i hadnt heard of it before but I may just have found my area of speciality

so now rather than getting 1 out of 20 i am happy with it will be 19 out of 20... happy days.

Ok, my opinion is that the camera doesn't matter in the creative process, skill will out. A photographer with the skill/talent can make a good image from the cheapest of equipment and the opposite applies to those lacking in skill/talent. I take snapshots with my expensive camera and I would take snapshots with a Lomo.
