So Jessops will go bust as they don't sell sensor swabs? Can't see that being the main reason myself!

No but they will if they give CUSTOMERS snotty glib answers ,read the post as intended ,a simple sorry we don't stock them would have been fine

I've yet to go into a "new" Jessops, but I guess they're (sales staff) not as clued up as they once were. There's one in Kingston not far from me and I keep meaning to pop in

My favourite remains the time I went into an independent camera store in Edinburgh, since closed (for reasons which may be connected to this story).

Student chap behind counter: Hello, sir, can I help you?
Me: Hello, I'd like to buy a set of close-up filters to fit a 67mm filter thread, please.
SCBC: Sorry, what?
Me: Close-up filters? They're like a magnifying glass filter that you screw into the lens for a kind of macro effect.
SCBC: Hahahaha! You what?! That's ridiculous, you can't get those, I don't know who told you about them, they're having you on!
Me (pointing behind him): They're on the shelf over there. I'll take the 67mm ones, please.
SCBC: Erm, right, erm, yeah, that'll be £14.95 please, sir.

I bought a new Canon 6D from them last month (Nottingham branch) and the staff were exemplary to be fair. Very knowledgable, honest, helpful and professional. Couldn't have been better. (They did try to sell me their cleaning service as part of the deal, but then I had told them I'd got a small issue with my 600D which really could do with some cleaning ...).

I'll definitely use them again. The worst part was having to brave Nottingham City Centre on a Saturday to get there, but nothing they can do about that ....!!!

I could go to almost any store and I am sure there would be someone I wouldn't get on with. Doesn't mean the whole company is going down the pan.

I can only say as I find, and they had always been polite and helpful to me in the past.
I bought my first (and only) DSLR from them, and they did a good deal, and I still have it years later.

Every time I go in there they jump on you as soon as you go through the door.

"Can I help you sir?"
Yes I'm looking for [ insert whatever here]
"No problem sir, someone will be with you as soon as they are free"

WTF, don't bushwack me as soon as I walk in unless you have the knowledge to help me. I hate it when they do this then stand around to repeat it to the next person who walks in. PC world do the same, I'm waiting whilst they are hanging about doing nothing................. They had a buy 2 get one free offer on filters last time I went in there. Jeez, they don't know what a filter is, and when you mention a 2 stop soft grad they look at you stupid. I specifically spend more to shop in a brick and mortar shop, I'm giving them my business even though I can get it delivered to my door, cheaper, and I save petrol/parking.

The least they could do is employ knowledgeable staff !!!

They do! Most people who visit (based on when I have been there) is an average person, someone who wants a camera but doesn't know or care about fps, buffer speed etc... Guess what, employing experts costs a lot of money, and people would then slate them for being to expensive.

I go into halfords, they know more about cars and bikes than me so are worth using. However if u are massively into that then they probably don't know as much as you so come across as useless!

Last time I used Jessops, I had done the order on line, collect in store thing because the store didn't have what I wanted in stock. When I went to collect the item (having received the e-mail telling me it was ready for collection) the assistant went to the back to get the item but it wasn't there since (according to the manageress) what they had on the shelf was exactly the same. It isn't! 2 days later they went pop for the final time (that round). For a while, the good staff in that particular store had been leaving for pastures new (and where the pay cheques didn't bounce...) leaving the useless ones to keep bailing. Luckily we have at least 2 decent camera shops in town who do their very best to match UK prices so Jessops are missed (by me) as much as my brain tumour.

As we probably use different shops I won't argue your experiences v mine. If jessops sold consumer cameras only, then your experience would ring true. The trouble is though they sell ( and stock ) professional equipment. As such, I would expect professional advice.
The good thing for Jessops though, is you can get professional advice from an amateur photographer. I used to use Jacobs before they went through, any staff in there gave excellent advice as they all were practising photographers. What I was told about Jessops ( just hearsay mind ) was don't buy from them on the weekend as they will have Saturday staff in there who haven't the foggiest idea about photography..........

Yeah, I went to my local garage and wanted to buy a new oil filter. The scammers wouldn't sell it to me unless THEY fitted it!!!!!

They won't last long with that attitude.

For anybody who knows anything about bikes, I went into my local Yamaha main dealer and asked the guy in the parts department for an oil filter for an R1. He said "what makes that".

He was properly shocked that anyone with a R1 was considering uncovering it from it's winter blankets :D

The old shop did that to me twice, expecting me to accept the display model rather than new. One was a tripod head that felt like it was full of sand.
We don't have one local now but still have two good independents

I was after some printer medium packs for my baby Canon Selphy - specifically the pre-printed and slightly heavier weight postcard paper. They tried to fob me off with the plain paper (actually, the sales assistant would have given me my money back but the manageress [who had been the D&P gofer at the old shop] insisted that the papers were exactly the same despite the evidence on both Jessops's site ["Oh, they always get stuff wrong."] and Canon's [which backed me up]) but I stood my ground until I got my refund. The shop I use whenever possible these days gave me (yup, gratis, free and for nothing!) what was left of a pack that a customer had opened - 3 ink ribbons and 104 sheets of the postcard paper.
