Well I have now moved to FF, got myself a 5Dc and really liking it. I am using a 50mm 1.8Mk1 (borrowed) which is quite nice but I have £500 to spend on glass.

I have made up a few options that I am considering but need some guidance. I am mostly landscap/night-time photography but do dabble in other stuff.

1: Canon 24-105L
2: Canon 17-40L + 50 1.8
3: Tamron 28-75 + Samyang 14mm
4: Sigma 24-70 2.8 + Sigma 70-200 2.8 non-os

My first thoughts when I was think was option 1, then I came accross the 17-40. Then my thoughts were do I need 'L' Glass, it would be nice mind.

Any thoughs guys?

I'm no expert in Canon lenses, so have no thoughts on quality, etc. I did move from crop to full frame this past fall, in the Nikon line-up. I, too, shoot a lot of landscape and night photography. I found that for both/either you really need the wide end for many shots. I wasn't satisfied at 24 mm, so eventually moved down to 14 to get the star/milky way shots and broad cityscapes. You don't have to get everything at once, though, so always buy the best glass you can afford.

I have both the 24-105 and the 17-40 (we have two cameras in case you wonder why).

The 24-105 is a really nice lens with the added value that it is a good portrait lens. It's only weakness for you needs might be that the 24 end is not quite wide enough.

The 17-40 scores just as well on sharpness with the added advantage of being that bit wider. Of course it does not score so highly as a portrait lens.

Decisions decisions!

Dude, you need to work out where in the focal range you want the quality.

If you want distance, it's a Canon 70-200...any version, no question, they're the best.

If its wide angle, 16-35 is the best, but 17-40 isn't far behind, but IMO if its for landscapes and you can stick at 17mm, get a Tamron 17-35(Bluenose is selling one). With landscapes your at f8-16 and the difference in IQ to the 17-40 is b****r all.

If its middle range, 24-70(third party lenses are right up there for IQ), or 24-105.

I WILL say I'm a prime man mostly, but I have a Sigma 15-30 for the decent quality, cheap, different/extreme view at 15mm, but not fisheye look. 50mm 1.4 as that's my perfect FL, 85 1.8 for longer portraits, but I'd love a Canon 70-200 2.8.

You can always get a cheap option of a lens you want, but do you homework on POTN and you'll eventually find cheap but decent quality options.

Thanks for the tips guys, really not decided on what I need. While on crop I used a Signal 10-20 all the time however when I got my Tamron 17-50 I found that on camera most of the time after that.

So in that way 24 should suit for the time being... I could always save my pennies for the samyang after that. So maybe the 24-105 would be suited, being looking through Flickr and like the shots I'm seeing. I think I have all the options just need a final decision now .
