Hello everyone. I'm hoping someone could help with my problem.

I have been looking at some studio lighting for taking photos of the children at home. My wife likes the photos with the white background (which I have just bought a white muslin sheet for) although we would like to try other backgrounds. I have been reading through the forum here to decipher what the best options would be but I am more confused now than ever. I was initially thinking continuous lighting but I have been put off that from what I have read here as it might be too bright or hot for the children to stand in front of. My budget is not great to give you an idea I have been looking at the eBay stuff or Neewar stuff on Amazon. I already have a canon speed light 430 exii if that is something I could utilise. If anyone has any products that they have had experience not that they could recommend in the budget range of stuff that would be helpfull too.

Many thanks
Matthew.

Forgot to say setup will be in a living room which doesn't have particularly high ceilings.

Some help, but you'll need to be more specific to nail this down.

To do white background shots well requires 4 lights and plenty of space. It's bizarrely the most difficult look to achieve and the thing most beginners want to start with.

If you're looking at the Neewer or similar 180Ws lights, they're pants for complicated reasons, some alternatives below.

If your budget will stretch to it, Lencarta starter kits come with fantastic support. If you really need to pare down to a cost, look for a Godox DE300 is a good start but you'll also need a stand and softbox.

But you could just get some triggers for your speedlight and a softbox too.

Thanks for your reply. I'm thinking the soft box with my speed light will be the best option to go down at the moment for my budget. I'm newbie to this so I am wondering why I would need a trigger? (I'm not disagreeing with the fact that I need one just trying to understand why). Doesn't my on camera flash fire the speedlite remotely? also if I wanted to add to the set up would I just be able to buy another soft box and something like another youngnuo speedlite along with a continuous light to sit behind the subject. would this achieve the white background look?

Yes your onboard flash will fire the remote flash.

But it's not very reliable and requires line of sight and gets fiddly to stop the onboard flash interfering with your lighting.

A YN622TX on camera and a YN622c on the flashgun would be the perfect combo, giving control and reliability.

Thanks Phil for your reply. Certainly some food for thought. I dont think im going to rush into anything, it all seems much more complicated than you think. Too many options as well.
