My primary (C) drive is a 120gb SSD, which is just about full after only having the new PC for a month or so. I've downloaded Elements and Lightroom onto my secondary (J) drive (1TB HD) but the pictures seem to initially store themselves on the C drive. While editing last night I could not carry out any actions til I had deleted some pictures and emptied the Recycle Bin. I kept getting a message telling me something was full and I had to delete stuff (can't remember the exact warning).

When installing new software I try to make sure it goes on the J drive.

My questions are: (Laymans terms please as I'm a total tube when it comes to this sort of stuff).

1) How do I configure the pics imported from my cards onto Lightroom and Elements to be in the J drive where the software is installed.

2) How do I move stuff safely from the C drive onto the J Drive to free up space.

3) Is there any other way to free space on the C drive (I've already done defrag and deleting internet history but that was crap and didn't improve things very much at all).

Cheers in advance.

1) On the right hand side of the import dialog you can control the location.
2) You can copy and paste files to a new location, but this will not work with programs, so to answer 3) at the same time - consider uninstalling some large programs and reinstalling on the J drive.

what do you have installed on the SSD? 120 should be fine for a reasonable amount of apps. id always have the apps installed to the SSD for the best speed.

run spacemounger over the drive and see whats using the most space.

id consider a sort out of programs and data, making sure that apps are on the SSD and all data apart from current working set is on the slow drive.

Cheers. I've had a look at the import dialogue and see that bit, they are indeed going to some folder in the C Drive so I'll change that the next time I import some. Ta!!

Once I've exported stuff from Lightroom it already goes to the J Drive and all my documents and other saved stuff is already there so there shouldn't be too much files to C+P. Not so sure about uninstalling and re-installing tho. The PC came with most stuff pre-installed and I don't have backups for all of it. Anything new I've added I've installed on the J Drive, if I was given that option (I think:)).

I don't understand any of that really:D. How do I tell whats on the SSD and how much space it's using (spacemounger?????).

Right I've looked at downloading that Spacemonger thing. It doesn't seem to give me the option to install it on the J Drive, it lists the destination on the C Drive and I can't see how to re-direct it to install on the J Drive. I think this has happened with some of the stuff (games etc) I've added when it's not given me the option of installation on the J drive, hence the C drive has filled.

Is your Drive J by any chance an external drive? If so, most of the times operating system or application software won't install to external drives unless it is an internal drive.

I think Neil means that you have to find out if your SSD had been filled up with unless files, like far too much temporary files, downloaded files for off-line use, software you installed but don't really use them anymore and never thought to uninstall them, hidden files, folders that contents sample files, etc., etc.,

In answer to the first question, the only way to move the pictures without losing them in the Lightroom catalogue is from within Lightroom itself by dragging and dropping in the Lightroom Folder section in the library. I'm not sure about Elements though.
