Ok all I am going to have a bash at cleaning the sensor on my 400D. I have checked out a few youtube videos and posts from other members on here. That all seems well within my capabilities. However what about the main mirror and focus screen, can the same technique be applied safely to these? can those little focus point dots be damaged if cleaned? or do they have a protective coating on them? It is mainly the mirror I am concerned about as it does have a bit of visible crap on it.I know this does not affect the pics but I just want to make sure it looks ok as I am going to be selling the camera shortly. Any do`s and dont`s here would be most welcome.

You can do the mirrors but they scratch very easily, I use a pecpad and a little eclipse fluid, but you don't apply any pressure to the pad just let it lightly go over the mirror.
Tbh unless it's filthy leave it.
