Im looking to be able to get shots like this one I took without cropping the original like I had to.

I also want to be able to do some macro stuff, bugs etc.

Would a Raynox 250 be usable for the shot above or would the DOF be too shallow? Id be using it with either a 18-55mm or 55-200mm lens and distance from the camera to subject is not really a problem bar I can only auto focus when 1m or more away from the subject with my D40. For the lego shots id be using a tripod and can have the camera as far away as I need (well up to 3 ish meters).

Thanks

Dean, yep the Raynox DCR250 will let you get in to that and closer... It does this by reducing the min focus distance... to about 12 cm's... With the 55-200 you'll be able to get up to about 2x lifesize (give or take)... but the DOF disappears to virtually nil...

It's a little bigger than a lego man... and this is a bit smaller...

and this is a lego alien

The EXIF is intact in the first two, and embedded in the border on the last one.

Thanks John. So if I were taking a shot like your alien and set the lens to 100mm rather that the 171mm you have, id get more in the shot and more DOF?

I've got the Raynox DCR-250, although very good it does require patience for best results. Not used mine much on my SLR though i use it quite regular on my Canon S5 IS along with a Raynox DCR-1540 1.54x TC.

To be fair, it gets you closer to your subject in a way no other £40 lens does, albeit with a few cons like the very shallow DoF. Well worth £40, or the DCR-150 is a fiver cheaper and you get a bit more DoF due to magnification not being as strong as is with the DCR-250

Dean, yes that's correct. I'd actually suggest keeping it at or below 100mm till your used to it, it's not an easy tool to use even at that sort of focal lengths and becomes really tricky beyond 100mm.

Exellent, thanks for the help guys

Ill try a wanted thread now before buying new.

Cheers.

Here's a video i made when i got mine, shot on the S5 IS with the DCR-250 mounted onto the DCR-1540. Note it's fully zoomed out from the beginning, zooming in to full optical zoom, 18x with the TC, then zooming further in using the 4x digital zoom.
You'll notice the severe drop in image quality as the noise levels of digital zoom make it look very lively.

I got mine off Amazon, i'd looked all over for them but Amazon was cheapest and at least you can get hold of 2nd hand ones off there.

Good video demo, thanks for sharing.

The DCR-150 lets you focus from around 12-14" away from your model (the DCR-250 is around 6-8" away) you may find the DCR-150 easier to get used to

ALMOST the same price as EBay but no postage! If you click on the 'new from' link, thers one a bit cheaper!

Thanks for the link. I managed to get one via a wanted thread here on TP for £25. No instructions with it but im sure I can work it out
