Right I have set my 5d Mk2 to Back Button focus using the AF-On button, and have disabled the focussing from the shutter button.

One operational question is what is the implication with regards to IS operation if you release the Back Button before pressing the shutter to take the photo

Will it be switched off ?

If the 5d is the same setting as a 40D then the answer is yes.

Either half press shutter or pressing af-on activates IS, i read somewhere that one technique is to half press the shutter to activate IS and give it chance to settle before focussing via af-on

if you hold it up to your ear and try the buttons you will hear kicking in and out

Does that mean that I should be half pressing the shutter button and then pressing the back button for focus? Not to confuse this but I have a 5D markIII.

It's all in your manual, it's not what you should do, it's about setting up the camera to suit how you like to shoot. Your AF On button should start your focussing (but the shutter will tussle with it if you don't use custom settings).

Once most have gone to BBF they never go back.

IS activates with the back-button.

Try it is the easy answer.. I can hear my IS come on wiht the back button.. if you let go then it goes off.. I press the shutter while still holding the back button

I rarely use IS but if I do then thats how.
