So I have a great big shed (it's one of those Finnforest log cabins made of smooth planed timber).

The outside is painted in Sadolin. The inside has been sitting there for about 6 years without any coating. Now I want to paint it. I want to go for that chalky beach hut sort of look without spending a great deal of money :)

Maybe a bit like this

Question....if I'm happy with a "smart distressed" finish, do I actually need to use eggshell? Could I save some time and money by using (say) a couple of coats of acrylic primer followed by a coat or 2 of white emulsion? Is there any reason to use actual wood paint on wood?

2 gallon tub of white emulsion and a couple of sticks of dynamite...

OR, a coat of primer (thinned down white undercoat will do at a pinch, as long as the wood isn't too knotty or sappy) followed by as many coats of emulsion as you feel you need to get the effect you're after.

The above photo looks like it might have been painted with a chalk paint, this type of thing

It does. I'll bet it has actually. That stuff is lovely.

However, my spreadsheet says I'll need 30 litres of paint. Which would be £480 from Ms Sloane. Or £44.67 if I pop down Screwfix for some Leyland Trade :D.

And I'm still reeling from the time I painted a room in Dulux "White Cotton" instead of Brilliant White. It really does look a bit nicer, but it's 3 times the cost ;)

If you want just a hint of colour rather than PBW, mix the contents of a tester pot into a 2 gallon tub of PBW. Not ideal if consistency of colour is vital but for the semi distressed chalk paint look, it should work. Dulux's colour charts used to be arranged by shade and intensity so you could get an idea as to which tester pot to add for the paler shades.

Spreadsheet?
I just buy a pot ( or two) and if its not enough, I go back and buy more :D

It's a project, therefore I must plan....
I "Plan" too, I get and idea in my head and at some point I "plan" to go to B&Q's or Wicks or what ever :D
