Hey all, I am looking at getting a printer that will allow me to print 9x6 size or ideally slightly bigger, It needs to provide good quality prints, be reasonably quick and fairly economic, most of all, it cant be to expensive. I dont mind going 2nd hand if need be....
Any ideas as after searching through previous threads, im still left confused!?

Thanks

Leon

A few questions...

How many prints will you be printing? A few a week, 10 a day, 60 an hour?

Are you looking at printing black and while or almost all colour?

Does it need to be portable?

Will you be selling the prints?

Answers to these questions will help in deciding which type of printer (dye sub or inkjet) and which models may be suitable for your needs.

Thanks for your reply.

im aiming for say 50-150 each use
full colour
needs to be prortable
and yes, the aim will be to sell the prints.

I had a look info dye sub and cant argue the fact it seems to be a better option however the price tag is not achievable right now. :-/

I've just bought a DS40 and am thrilled with it. IMO if you are selling prints and marketing as on site printing/event tog you need a professional printer which means shelling out for a dye sub; I was told by many people it would pay for itself very quickly... going to find out soon as my first day onsite printing is tomorrow!

Looking at your proposed usage, I really wouldn't recommend any inkjet. To get something economical enough and reliable enough (150 prints is quite a lot for most ink-jets to handle reliably), you will be spending a fair whack, that may be better to put towards a dye-sub.

And to follow on from marc- you will make your money back very very quickly if you buy a dye sub... the initial outlay is a lot but believe people when they say it pays for itself sooner rather than later- my first show with on site printing I tripled what I normally make web only!

OK, So dye sub seems to be the reccomendation, what ones are affordable but also provide quality? theres as DS40 on e-bay going to £800 used but that seems like a lot.......

I was going to say canon, and have seen people on pro shoots with a canon inkjet. He was wearing a canon sponsored shirt too!
Canon is my favourite for home use but I would go dye sub for on-site events and I've looked at 2nd hand options which seems quite reasonable.

Mitsubishi Cp9000dw-k Thermal Dye Sub Printer does 6x4
Olmec OP1000 Dye Sub Printer photobooth, event photography does larger
decent money
and 2nd hand I think they'd retain some value should you jump ship in 6-9months to a better option

Hey Matt, had a look at that Olmec OP1000, got a couple on e-bay looking fairly reasonably priced, However, and god knows how I caught this, They apparently dont have the drivers for windows 7, so only work on computers with up to windows vista... which is disapointing as I would have prob purchased it :-/

Leon, get onto Mike Weeks, Jeremy Nako, or Paul Rogers - they may be able to offer more advice. All three use this forum. My suggestion would be on second hand a Mitsubishi, something like a CP9550 or CP9810. Reliable and easy to get print media for.

No Mac driver for OP1000 by the way, media available from Photomart. Good machine, but starting to show its age against newer machines from DNP and Mitsubishi.

lol, mark, i JUST messaged on one of your previous threads to PM me as I couldnt you, you seem to be the guy in the know on most of these threads, maybe its your avatar that highlights you :)
The CP9950 does look like a fab machine but is out of my budget, (cheapest on e-bay is £900 :-/
Any other reccomendations?

No problem. Well, machines other to consider- Fuji ASK2000, yes the OP1000, HiTi 730, but that is slow, but that said it is cheap to buy second hand.

Contact some of the sellers of new printers and see if they have any machines secondhand, so they would be Photomart (ask for Gary Hinds), System Insight, Richard Frankfurt, AGX.

Good luck with the hunt.

Mark, is it possible to get the op1000 to work on windows 7?

No Windows 7 driver on the OP1000. After ICI was bought out by AkzoNobel a few years back, all development on that printer stopped. Yes, it is based on a Shinko 2145 , but as an ICI Imagedate Olmec branded machine it's dead end.

So really the best advice I can give is buy a new Mitsubishi or DNP, or rent one from either Photomart or System Insight.

Leon, I have just seen on another forum that System Insight are selling some secondhand Mitsubishi CP-D70 DW printers.

Best you contact them pronto. I would put up the link, but I don't think the Mods would approve.
