Another picture of Nikon D700 on Chinese site

A textbook example of a "Rumour-around-the-Brand" communications strategy. Whether it's real or not, or whether the rumour originated from Nikon itself or from outsiders, is irrelevant.
 
I think it was an orchestrated leak as a number of dealers knew about the D700 in broad terms at least 3 weeks ago.
 
It used to an open secret that Japenese Marketing 'leaked' the spec of a new product before it was even at the prototype stage so they could 'tune' the specs to meet what the feedback said.

I was in meeetings with Sharp years ago on new TFT's that I wanted to use in some of the kit I was designing. They showed me a full data sheet with 'photos' , I said "that's perfect for me" , they replied "not yet designed, maybe 18 months" :D
 
I've had the D700 confirmed by the dealer I use. Tomorrow at 10am is the time to check for the announcement :D
 
If this is going to be a sub £1600 camera then I will be very tempted to place an order at 10.01am :D
 
Full frame, 51-point autofocus, 5 frames per second or 8 with the battery grip, 95% viewfinder, sensor cleaning and MSRP of 2000 pounds. As expected really.

Also a new SB900.

£2000 price... hmmm maybe just go for a D3 then.
 
£2k makes sense to me. Anything too little would impact D300 and D3 sales. Also, with it being more compact, you won't look quite so paparazzi-ish holding it like you would a D3. Its still a fair bit cheaper than a D3 and I'm sure HK will sell it cheaper too, magazines always give higher RRPs.
 
From a RRP it's the right price, in the middle of the two other bodies, but slightly biased towards the D300 pricing. But for me that's too close to the current street price of the D3, but then in a few months the D700 will have a lower street price making the gap about the same again.
 
Very interesting. I really cannot see the 5d replacement being close to 8FPS with a 51 point AF system. Great pricepoint too, it'll probably be closer to £1800 online when it hits the shelves.

I wonder if it is going to have the high ISO expansion of the D3? or if it'll be capped at 3200 or 6400?
 
Having 2 x D3's would just be greedy though..... ;)
 
Well 1st of july and no announcement yet, and digital depot have changed the wording on their advert to "D700 coming soon" be interesting to see what happens over the next couple of days.

I can't imagine why. Damn it. Do they not realise people expected an update at 12:01am!? Honestly, Nikon seriously suck. You wouldn't get this with Canon. No sir.

Anyone want to buy a barely used D300? ;)

This is perfect. Just waiting to see if anyone offers any sweeteners on them ;)
 
I reckon it'll be possible to pick one up for £150 less than RRP on launch day.

Not sure I'm going to rush into anything, the D300 droped loads quickly, and even the D3 can be had for about £2300 as a "refurb" (unsold BNIB stock) now.
 
Where can you get a refurb D3 for that price? I'd be tempted with that instead...

On paper spec looks impressive enough, but to my mind its taken Nikon a heck of a long time to produce what is in effect a parts bin special (D3/D300 parts) - considering Canon have had the 5d out for a number of years i think its a poor response from Nikon. Great camera it will undoubtedly be, but its a bit Skoda Octavia to my mind - all great bits from the group parts bin, but not quite there as a complete package ??

I'm not sure what your point is though. It's taken Nikon a few years to come up with the latest cameras D3/D300/D700 while Canon always had a bit of an advantage. Now Nikon have leapfrogged over Canon with 3 new cameras to move the game on. I'm sure an FX camera withou tthe integrated grip was always planned to compete with the 5D, but the D3 and D300 were released first, presumably because they took priority in the development labs.

Since the D3 is ahead of the 5D, it stands to reason that the D700 must be too. Which means Canon now have to produce a 5DMk11 or whatever to compete.

Isn't this always how Electronics works?

My point is that at times in the past Nikon could have produced somethign based on the D200 to compete at that time. Certainly the D70 when launched was beyond the then EOS300d/350d in terms of IQ, and the prior to that the D100 was out before the 20d Canon ?

I'm sure the D700 is a very good bit of kit but if i was a Nikon user and had been waiting for this FF camera i'd be a bit disappointed in its amalgamation of parts. At least the 5d (now dated) used its own unique parts for the important bits. If you view it as a cheap D3 than its a bargain, just not sure i'd feel the same about the jump from a D300 to the D700.

Mind, it took me a long time to jump 30d to 5d so what do i know :D
 
I don`t know, there are probably a lot of Nikon users who have been aching for a full frame at a cheaper price, and because the d700 uses the sensor from the D3, they know that it can perform. Personally i think its a very good move by Nikon, they are inundating the top end of the market with very good camera`s in very short sucsession, so far as I am aware non of the cameras suffer from any major issues. Allright you may be able to get a 5D at a much cheaper price but then its much older technologically and the new 5D (when it comes out) most likely will be more expensive.

I think if you're a real photographer, you don't care what parts are in it, you care about the IQ. The difference between a D300 and a D300 in IQ alone is huge. So the D700 is an awesome step up from the D300. I'll be getting a D700 to replace my D300 for sure.

Really thought this might all be rumours. Good to see a full frame Nikon lower in price from the D3. However the gap is alot from a D300 so look forward to hearing the reviews. Id certainly be interested in this as an upgraded in months/year to come.

Say what now? They were basically the same. I think the 300D/350D had much nicer noise handling too. For me, as a Canon user, the D700 is mighty tempting. The price difference between the D700 and the D3 is a lens and if I can do my job with a 30D then I can do it with a D700. I keep saying this but all I want from a new body is 5fps & a D3 sensor for the ISO. If Canon don't make a 5Dm2 with that then I may jump ship.
