Well Just found out my local Jessops have closed down & the Cannock store is no more:shake: It was always handy to pop in for things needed quickly.

Generally sad news, but as you've just written between the lines of your post, when you wanted to spend real money, you went somewhere else!

This is true as there were always better deals around, thing is everytime you went in it was rammed. still sad news though, seems at this rate there will be nothing left!

I don't know why people like that shop. I hate my local one. Far too expensive...

Whilst we all want good prices, always going for the cheapest, usually online will result in physical shops with the higher overheads struggling and their eventual demise. Where do you go for advice, the friendly local photo shop is an endangered species. Much the same as small local independents, pushed to extinction by our patronage of the big boys like Tescos. So unless you support smaller useful places they will dissapear, and the internet whilst great isn't always the answer.

Corrected for you ;)

I have ambivalent feelings about Jessops' financial difficulties for exactly this reason. There's some Karmic resonance going on...

In full adgreedmet,so many people want both ways, they will go into their local shop, try the cameras ask for advise, then walk out and find the cheapest place online to buy it :(

I've never had anything but terrible retail experiences at Jessops, they are the PCWorld of camera shops.

But when your 250% the price of Amazon. It's your fault.

A small independent retailer without the buying power of Amazon, may well be buying the stock in at 250% the cost to Amazon.

Not sure where the 250% comes from.
Besides, many smaller retailers use Amazon anyway.

I've been to a lot of Jessops stores and although there's some variation I've had much better experience of using them then say Halford's for cycling stuff or PC World for computer stuff.

my local jessops was never a place to go for advice lol

I would agree with the 250% on items like batteries, I have a local Jessops and to date ive spent £0 there so if it goes I wont miss it.

Depends which branch you mean, the main Sauchiehall st branch used to have (many moons ago) some fairly knowledgable staff, the other branches I'd be loathed to ask for advice on how to get to Argyle St.

Not 100% true, my local independent ( Robert White and Castle cameras) both came out cheaper on a Canon 50mm f1.4 this week, and I don't mean by a few pennies.

all of them have been full of morons with very little camera and or print knowlege.

I bought all of my original equipment at Jessops-obviously unaware that it was terrible for such purchases-and got to the point where a couple of them knew me by sight and would say hello.

I had early success in my business, and upgraded a lot of equipment in the first six months. One day when I was upgrading my 450d to a 50d, I think it was, a guy asked me how it was all going, and I said it was going great. I said I was really happy with how things were progressing, and was surprised the business came as quickly as it did, which was handy, because I'd quit my job and was worried I wouldn't cover the bills.

To this, he leaned over the counter, and with barely concealed venom, said "That's great, but remember, it can all end at any minute..". He then gave me my receipt.

I never went back.

I like to pop in and check out new stuff when I'm passing. However I'm lucky enough to live near WEX so can get excellent advice from them and not bad prices too.

Same in Slough closed a while back

Reading shop not bad in the week but at the weekends the children come out to play :|

All the best,Ian

In my experience they've never really been that knowledgable or that helpful. There was just the one member of staff in the branch local to me that was friendly and seemed to know his stuff.

I'm all for local independent camera shops but jessops is just any other national monopoly on the market they're no different from the supermarket chains and as such won't be sad to see any of them disappearing from our high streets.

I was far more disappointed to see the smaller chain of wildings shops closed down. At each of the branches i used to frequent they were always friendly, happy to see you and very helpful with reasonable prices.

My point was, you can't blame a small indy for being more expensive than Amazon when they obviously don't have the ability to buy in the same kind of quantities as a large online retailer.

In the cases where they aren't more expensive they've probably had do take a considerable cut on margin to do so.

I've bought a few bits and pieces from Castle over the years and their level of service is very good, and more often than not they are cheaper than the larger chains.

I Buy a lot of camera stuff online. But ive got my last lens from jessops as they had the best deal on. Also feels safer than buying online.

I ordered online and picked up in store, saved me 100 pounds. The only lens I found nearest to the price of Jessops, was from hong kong and was only 100 cheaper. But you might have to pay import tax!

Maybe they are doing more deals so they don't go bust.

My last purchase was a few months ago and this was for a lens, I got this from Jessops. I used to get my stuff from Best Kamera in st helens a great little place until it closed down.

I thought there was one on the other side of the road, but couldnt remember what it was called. Thanks. I take it they are better? I'm looking at filters

All is not lost, Jacobs is just opposite, ;)
Not keen on Jacobs they keep all the cameras in glass cases, it's a pain asking them to unlock the cases each time I want to have a look at the cameras!

Isle of wight Jessops is always pretty bare. Probably more visitors use the processing.

I went in to the local Coventry store to buy a flash and the lazy sod never got out of his chair to show me the different options available. Needless to say I walked out the shop without purchasing anything and definitely won't be back.

We used to have a Threshers near us that I used but it closed about 3 years ago.

Some Asian chaps have opened the shop now as an offy. 99% of my booze comes from them. They know by name now.

After a few weeks I asked them if they could get KWV Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc. Next Friday when I was in, there it was. They also have a massive selection of non 'standard' beers, lagers and spirits.

Most of there wine is in fridges.

I wish them every success as the large supermarkets pee me off just killing all the local shops.

I would gladly goto my local high street cash in hand and buy a camera, lens, computer, laptop, tv or any other electrical item... just like when I was younger and got a buzz walking into a toy shop with my pocket money and taking home some Lego, a toy or whatever there and then.

But I resent going to the shop, finding out they have no stock, presumably incase they get lumbered with it, other than the display model that they will happily sell me for the same price as a sealed box, and on the rare occasions they do have stock it is usually ridiculously inflated prices.

And shops wonder why people would rather use the web

I wish tesco sold more choices of stuff

I've always tried to buy my camera gear from my local shop http://www.comleycameras.net/

excellent service, staff knowledgable, but Nikon wouldn't let me buy my D4 or 200-400mm from them. They aren't a Nikon Pro shop. But are a Nikon dealer. It grates me when I choose to buy Nikon gear and can't buy it from the dealer that I want to buy from. :bang::bang:

Kev.

Always preferred to go into Jessops or Jacobs and buy goods if I can even if its a few quid dearer.
Just bought my X100 from Jessops and some kit from Jacobs.
Although from reading it seems Jacobs might not be around much longer as they've gone into administration tonight.

A lot of people seem to complain about lack of knowledge of some of Jessops staff and some say they will never use one again because of this. Yet they are happy to shop online where most of the time they don't even get to speak to anyone at all, just click a few boxes and fill in your address and payment details. Surely a little knowledge is better than none.

I doubt you can just ring up Amazon and speak to someone knowledgeable on the product you want to buy, be it photographic or anything else. A case of cutting off your nose to spite your face?
