Another new camera - the Reflex SLR.

Thanks Carl. Perhaps I will one day. :)

I am not being deliberately argumentative by the way, but there are people out there making very good livings from photography and doing it on film as their medium of choice.

Of course there are a good mix of people on here no doubt and I wasn't meaning to generalise as much, however personally I did find forums in general quite counter productive to what I want to do with my photography. I generally only pop in the F&C section now. I do think Terry's comments though about the people who would mainly want to use film (students and artists) are way off the mark when there are many enthusiasts, hobbyists AND working professionals who either use a part film workflow or a 100% film workflow.

My comments do not relate to who are using film now. They are coming to it from the medium and long term production of the necessary equipment and materials.

Lookiing at one product alone, film scanners. It seems only low end film scanners are still being made, though the gap is being filled, to some extent, by dual purpose flat bed scanners. None with focusing ability. What stocks might still be sold, were manufactured some time ago.

Film has an entirely different aesthetic that is pleasing to many people, including more and more younger people (https://cameraventures.com/save-analog-results), and it is evidently worth the extra effort of developing and scanning/printing - indeed it may even bring a satisfaction of it's own. Tbh, I see more of a problem for digital cameras in the long run, with mobile phones getting ever better with software tricks to emulate larger sensor size effects, it will be good enough for most people not to bother with a standalone digi camera. Saying all that, I like and enjoy using both, and want both to succeed in this post-mobile camera world!

There's an article on this in The Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/jan/28/does-reflex-slr-camera-herald-35mm-film-renaissance

Reading the comments is depressing though.

Its like people go out of their way to be arsey about it.
I don't really get it, there will always be dingbats intent on trolling discussions on the anonymous internet, because they just can, but it seems to go beyond that.
I mean, do they consider a resurgence in film use to be some kind of threat or attack to the use of digital, or what...I dunno..?
Its always the same old condense the issue down to the resulting picture, ignore everything but a picture displayed on a monitor, make it the same thing from both mediums and its easy to embroider the virtues of digital and be disparaging about film.
In reality, they couldn't be more different, they are so loosely related these days that you could argue the same points in a digital vs charcoal drawing discussion, about the only thing they share is the similarity of the equipment used at initial capture.
Why don't we have digi v charcoal discussions or film v water colours, its a very short hop from digi v film.

The comments are only to be expected as many people wouldn't have the time, money or commitment that film requires, even down to the postal costs for sending it away to be processed. I'm even seeing on other websites that the new iPhone-X may be "better" than a real compact camera, so pretty much a sign of the times. A friend's teenage kids thought it was hilarious that he bought CDs, far less vinyl, since downloads is where it's at nowadays. We'll get there. ;)

It's the gelatine that's an essential component of film emulsions that's the problem. I came across someone on another forum who wouldn't touch film photography for this reason.

Yes, I know it’s the gelatin my point is rather different. Vast numbers of animals are directly or indirectly killed in the production of food for vegans - not exclusively for them, of course - and yet they worry about the gelatin in film :(
