Camera maker MiNT has unveiled plans for a premium 35mm compact camera.

The Hong Kong-based company, which is best known for its InstantKon rangefinder instant camera and the InstantFlex TL70 TLR, has now set its sights on a new premium-end compact.

H'mm challenging unless is as simple as an old box brownie, and anything more sophisticated they would have to find sources for the parts and find staff who would know how to build the camera. Probably why you would never see a new SLR unless Canon, Nikon etc decide to make one.

Will be quite difficult to build something affordable to compete with the Contax T2 - the prices are those are currently very silly but there are a lot of other more affordable options. Great to see innovation

If there instant camera price is anything to go by might as well get a T2

While it would be nice I can't quite see it ever happening. Film isn't going to take off again.

Film doesn't need to take off for it to be a successful product though. I doubt we will ever get back to the days where you could walk into Dixons or Argos and buy a compact film camera (not including Fuji Instax), but I think there will still be a market for it amongst the current film photography user-base if it's a good product and is priced accordingly.

I've been doing "serious" photography since 1966. So far as I'm concerned, the advent of digital is the best thing that ever happened to photography.

If people want to use chemical based materials that all fine and dandy by me. I'm just not impressed when they try to hype it as "real" photography and superior to digital.

And no-one in this thread has done so, so why bring it up at all? This has nothing whatsoever to do with film vs digital, it's a thread about a new film camera being in development. Reading the Kosmofoto article, there is no mention of "real" photography, or superiority of any sort.

Also it's all about supply and demand, there must be millions of working compact cameras around and if they dry up and people still want a compact camera then there will be a demand.

Good to know, thanks.

Thought I'd go absolutely nowhere in my film photography journey without your explicit approval.

Cheers then!

Impolite and rude comment, not called for.

Oh dear, I didn't see your tails on the floor before I stepped on them. Hope they get better soon, :naughty:

Given that this is the "film and conventional" section, and that the thread is about a new film camera, I find it difficult to believe that your post was anything other than an attempt to stir things up given the content of it.

......and he has forgoten that nearly all of us filmies have digi cameras (or even a mobile) as well and we know what they can do and when we want to use them, and here no one minds a quick digi shot of some gear or whatever.

Back to the Mint, I read an article that hinted they might do a similar thing as they've done (apparently) in the Instant Camera space, ie take an existing well know camera and upgrade its capabilities. If so, that might get over the barrier of finding a shutter supplier, which I think did for the last one (Reflex???)...

The struggle for them will be the vast numbers of very good film cameras already out there that can be had for a small price, although it would be nice to see them do well I'm not sure I would buy one at £500 plus ( I have no idea how much they will be) when I can buy some very good cameras for less than £50 !

As regards the above Troll I'm sure we all know in this section that film photography blows digital into the weeds ! :)

This camera is being marketed as a high-end model, competing against things like the Yashica T4’s and Contax T2’s of the world, and the article mentions that the new camera will come in for a lower price than those fetch as there would be no point to it otherwise. It will be that market they’re aiming for, rather than the photographers who are happy to spend much smaller amounts on Sure Shots or Espio’s or whatever. It won’t be for everyone, but it doesn’t have to be.

But can you see the difference as I have the T5 plus about 15 compacts in the past which I bought as a joke giving them to to my wife..anyway although I didn't do extensive tests to compare the resolution of a Zeiss lens to say a Nikon for ordinary shots, in testing the compacts out, and they all gave VG shots. About 8 years ago or more and to get the digi guys to try film, produced shots from a Nikon AF 210 bought for 50p, film 10p and Asda dev and scanned £3...total cost £3.60.
IIRC have posted shots here taken with the Nikon AF210.

That’s a good question. I’ve never used one of the high end compacts, although I’ve heard from one person who owned a Contax T2 who claimed it had the sharpest lens he’d ever used. I expect that there is a difference to be had, but I suspect it will be subtle in many cases. I also expect that results almost as good can be had with far more cost-effective cameras. Plus, at the end of the day, a high-end camera isn’t a automatic guarantee of high-end photographs - there are plenty of awful photos shot with Leicas, and plenty of amazing photos shot with budget gear for instance.

Well if they are going to compare to the Yashica Ts they better add a feature like:- can also be used for waist level viewing, and would thinking buyers would be very interested if it had a Carl Zeiss lens (the T5 has the Tessar)..AF or fixed? and where would they get a CZ lens and at what cost. Anyway hope they have a winner.
