Another Lightroom Import issue

I'm having a problem importing existing photo's into Lightroom. I download photo's using the EOS Utility to the following folder structure: Photos > Base Images > YYYY > YYYY_MM_DD - the Canon software creates the last folder dated month and day. I then go to Lightroom and Import the photo's using the 'Add' option. Lightroom successfully imports the YYYY_MM_DD folder, however it is placing this folder in the root of the catalogue. Previously the photos would be imported and visible in the Photos > Base Images > YYYY > YYYY_MM_DD folder structure.

How do I get Lightroom to import to the existing folder that has the base images?

My iMac has recently been rebuilt following a hard drive failure. Lightroom (local copy not CC) has been re-installed and I have copied both all the original photos and Lightroom Catalogue onto the rebuilt computer from backup's.

If you are using Lightroom, then why bother with the EOS utility? Would it perhaps not be easier just to insert the SD card into the iMac card reader and use the Lightroom Import functionto import the images with key words into a dedicated download folder. Then after culling etc, apply your own numbering system and move to the destination folder. I much prefer Lightroom for applying key word and renumbering. I suggest Lightroom is much better and more flexible than EOS Utility. I doubt if EOS can provide key words for importing, which I regard as essential. Sorry I cannot answer your question, but generally I prefer not to use manufacturers' software. They are very good at making cameras, but not so good with software compared to the likes of Adobe.
Hope that helps!

Not sure why you are using EOS utility to import images like Peter has said. I'd import to Lightroom straight away. What sort of directory structure are you trying to use in Lightroom?
Lightroom does allow a certain amount of customisation in the naming of images, but where you put them is generally upto you. You also have the opportunity to organise within shoot date. it's all a question on what you are trying to achieve

Nah don't use the EOS utility. I've always plug cable in to camera, switch camera on and then click on 'import' in Lr, then make a new folder. I'm sure it's a lot easier than what you're currently doing now :)

It's my understanding that "Add" doesn't alter the folder structure that the images are stored in at all.

however it is placing this folder in the root of the catalogue

I don't understand what you mean by this. The catalogue is just a database with no images other than previews. It just references the location of the actual image (in your case Photos > Base Images > YYYY > YYYY_MM_DD)

Not sure if this will solve the problem, as I'm not sure exactly what the problem is. However in Lightroom go to the Library module. In the left hand pane find the "Folders" tab. Right click and see if the "Folders" option is ticked. If not tick it and see if this solves the problem
