Do you have full control of your folders in L2? I have already got used to where i have put images, images for the web (Re sized) and RAW images for burning to disk plus backups. So will L2 take all this into account and let me carry on or will it create folders and rename files by itself?

Cheers

Andy

err, wouldn't lightroom do those sort of things via its export function without moving the originals?

I don't know, thats why i'm asking. i have read reviews and it goes on about the file structure and it sounds to me like it takes contol when saving your images which i don't want. Just wondering how flexable it is? I'm only interested in how it deals with saving files, not those already on my HD.

Hmm... well when i import i tell lightroom to leave the originals where they are, then move them within the LR library module if i feel so inclined. Bear in mind I use the Canon eos utility to import my photo's first, and to a dated folder structure on my hard disk.

When I want to export for web use i use a predefined export template which does that and places them exactly where i want them (in the correct part of my local web server). And when i want to back up my original raw files I just do a file synch onto a number of external drives, without invoking lightroom at all.

Does that help? if not, and you can pose a specific test i'll be happy to put LR to it...

Lightroom won't place anything without your say-so. But it does automatically save all photos you have worked on in the location chosen by you when you import them. It will also save catalogs in a location, again chosen by you. Go to "edit" then "catalog settings" where you can choose the default location. You can create new collections, sets or folders in library. In other words - it is completely flexible.

Andy,

Have a look round the web for some LR tutorials that will help.

However on the questions you raise I'll try and help. When you import images into lightroom, it is adding them to it's database. You can tell it to leave them where they are ( as in images already on your hard drive), or import them to a new location as from you camera card, or other media. It's usually a good idea to store them in one simple location. That saves a lot of problems. Think about how you want to organise your images first , That helps.

Now as far as backups are concerned you really have to do that yourself, unless you've instructed LR to do that at the import stage. Look at the dialogue box and you'll see that option. I tend not to get LR to do it for several reasons. First I may want to sort the images into separate folders and I want that to be reflected in my backups. Second I will probably want to rename the images , so again I need the new names to be backed up. Thirdly it takes extra time, and as I am going to change things anyway there isn't any point.

Now if you decide to move images around let LR do it for you. This way it keeps it's database up to date so you can find them again,

When you export images either for other applications LR will put them where you tell it to. For web possibly set up a folder called web and export to that. You can set this up as a preset in the module. Other exports you can do the same. I have one called develop which is segregated by years. i.e 2008, 2009. I then set up a sub folder in the export module with suitable name.

Play around with LR, you can make mistakes and try again by simply making a new catalogue ( database) and starting again.

Thanks folks, much appreciated :bonk:
