My daughter has an old dell laptop which has always got very hot and has a very noisy fan.
Yesterday it seemed to be even hotter than usual so I blew (by mouth) into the outlet vent and the fan stopped working after a few puffs but has now stopped spinning, or at least it isn't making any noise...
I downloaded speedfan and it say the thing is running at 72 degrees.

Is it easy to replace a laptop fan, and is 72 degrees way to hot ?

Get a can of compressed air and a Hoover. Spray in one end suck with the other. I had an ledger philips laptop that was reaching 90c, quick spray with the air and it cam back to around 65.

What sort of CPU % activity is it running at?

Virtually nil - just reading emails...!!

I was thinking about compressed air and a hoover, but having blown into the air vent and since then the fan has stopped making noise I was wondering if I might have blown some dust into the fan..

You may have, but just get a can of air. Try it!

Yeah but have you checked the CPU graph, might be a background service.

Hoovers can generate a lot of static, wouldn't advise that.

Well, after a lot of puffing and blowing like the big bad wolf, I restarted the thing and was waiting for the fan to kick in with its usual racket....
After a few minutes of near silence I gently turned it upside-down only to see the fan spinning away quietly !
Seems to be running at about 58 - 60 degrees now at idle - col enough to rest on your knee without needing skin grafts, so very many thanks for all the help !
