I bought a Seculine Twinlink kit last week and used it in anger on the local NW Stages rally a few days later. Even though I was accredited media, the marshall's only allowed me to return to the flash unit and adjust before the stage went live twice, and it was a no no to return to the flash whilst the stage was running so I wasn't able to re-adjust.

My question is, Even though I was shooting at comparatevely low shutter speeds (1/60 & 1/80) there's no real movement in the images. Should I have also used 2nd curtain sync? Also, the cars were taking different lines around the hairpin, thus I had a few shots that were blown out. The flash was set in manual at 1/64 and 24mm.

Thanks for any feedback.

It looks like the cars were going quite slowly there, though there is some blur. You just have to drop the shutter speed, according to the speed, the light level and the effect you want.

There's nothing you can do about exposure at changing distances, unless you have auto-TTL flash. Second curtain sync works well with subjects like that, putting the blur behind the subject rather than in front, but it doens't work until shutter speeds get below about 1/30sec, and the longer the better.

I posted this pic the other day, but it's also relevant here. Shutter speed was about 1/10sec as I recall, second curtain sync, flash gelled and balanced with fading daylight and floodlights.

BTW, remote second curtain sync is not always straightforward with radio triggers.

Hi I'm new here, sorry to jump straight in, your question is interesting.

I think you may be seeing the power of the flash to freeze motion.
I had this problem with unwanted freezing of the spokes of mountain bikes when panning, first or 2nd curtain.

The shots look pretty cool to me anyway, I like them.
