another flash question

I have bought a flash from ebay, whihc has 3 modes

TTL manual full and manual 1/16 (as well as various zoom options) but has no manual with it

when i put it in ttL my D50 wont take any pictures.

Is this simply that the flash isnt campatible with my camera (which beleive uses ITTl) or is there an option I have to set on my camera somewhere.

I looked in the manual but well that didnt help me much

I did buy the flash to go onto a slave shoe as a secondary flash, but as the one I use for my camera is even older, then I would be happy if I can get the TTL to work if it is a posibility.
 
Which flash model is it - may make it a bit easier to find out where the problem lies.
Sounds like the flash is incompatible to me but I may be wrong :shrug:
Does it fire at all in manual or auto mode or is it just not firing at all no matter the settings?
 
it is a sunpak4000AF which i believe is the same as the metz40

it fires fine in manual (both full and 1/16)

it also fires using the slave unit (in manual modes)
