hi all going tenerife in jan, does anyone suggest i need a filter on my d7100 lens for hopefully the strong sun or not, also fancy trying the long exposure technique with a 10 stop filter but have various lens sizes, can any one recommend a cheapish system/lens that doesnt break the bank(as probably wont use much after that) cheers guys

Depending on how bright the sky is compared to the foreground (IIRC Tenerife is volcanic, so foreground rocks could be very dark indeed) you might need ND grads, for long exposures the Haida filter gets good reviews for the money (for clarity I've not used that one).

For reasonable priced grads look at Hitech, you'll only need one or two, a 2 and 3 stop hard edge will suit your crop sensor camera and cover most situations.

Have a look here I think this will fit a standard kit lens

If you want a 10 stopper to fit your different lenses, you could get a screw in one, and then cheaply buy the appropriate step up/down rings.

thanks guys if im using it on a couple of lens with different thread sizes am i better getting one to fit the larger lens and stepping up or for the smaller lens ,or getting one for the smaller lens and stepping down for the larger lens thanks

Better off getting the larger filter.

Sent from my phone as I cant be a***d to turn the PC on.

thanks is a circular polariser same as a standard polariser as i have a circular one somewhere, have you used any of the above nd filters please

The circular (cpl) filter is the one you want, the other type is linear which can cause issues with AF and metering. In my bag I have a Cokin filter system consisting of ND Grad (1,2,3 stop) can be bought as a kit with the holder for about £45, I also have a screw in CPL but I am looking to replace this with the one to fit the Cokin system, that way all I need is a few adaptor rings (£10 each) and I have filters for the all my lenses. If you are looking to the future then this may be the way to go as if you buy a new lens with a different filter size, all you need is a different adaptor.

Also if you are using grads, you really want to be looking at rectangular ones so that you can adjust where the line is

Here's a link for more info http://www.cokin.co.uk/index.htm
