I also know a few people who,when they know it is a scam, will put in artificially high bids in the hope that others will either realise or just stop bidding as the price was too high.

yeah, me and a mate had lots of fun on the day the x-box came out and people were listing boxes and selling them as x-box box with careful wording.
we bid millions on those things and ****** a lot of scammers off

I got ripped off. Canon 400d body for £220. Looked too good to be true. The guy was using a method called drop shipping.
It all looked pretty genuine.
I could honestly not find a single thing wrong with the listing.
The guy had 50 95% feedback.
I bought it, and a lot of other people did, since he had about 10 on this listing.
Apparently the guy couldn't send it to me, because his bank account got closed so he couldn't send them, so he was going to refund my money.
I was obviously very annoyed, so gave him negative feedback saying I was disappointed and frustrated with the poor service.
He got a lot of reports to paypal, and paypal closed his account without refunding my money.

Took about 3 months to get £200 back. Lost £20, and a lot of time. Wasn't happy.
