Viewscan is doing my head in. The other day my 4870 stopped working. It was stopping during the preview & scan. I tried a different usb port and it was the same. It just starts off then stops and then does nothing.

I stuck on my old 3490 and that was fine so I naturally assumed that the 4870 was bust.

I got a canon 9000F ii to replace it so I could scan the medium format and the F$*(£(£ thing is doing the same as the 4870! WTF?! Tried another usb port.

I do not understand why a scanner would start doing a preview and just stop for no reason at all. It's doing my head in. I have just coughed up for a new scanner to find that it is no better.

Is there any way of telling whether the usb ports are duff on an imac? I have the same sparking issue when plugging something in as Will had... Really P'd off. I have to get this scanned and I can't!

It's vuescan. It can't tell you if there is an issue with the transparency adaptor so it just goes into a loop. Apple image capture can tell you which is how I discovered that's was what was wrong!

Fiddled with the adaptor so now it works but you wouldn't have any idea if you just used vuescan.

So you had "issues" with the tranny adapter on both the 4870 and 9000f ?

Tbf, it was unlikely to be a USB port, 99 times out of 100 its software or operator error......ehem..:D

Odd thing is I don't have the film holders for the 4870 and it was set to flatbed mode anyway as it barfed on a normal document. The 3470 I plugged in and changed nothing and it just worked. That also has a transparency hood. Makes no sense.

9000 has blitzed through 60 odd transparencies and a load of prints without hiccups once I worked out what vuescan was trying to tell me through the medium of mime.... :)
