Another data cock up by a government department

I agree in principle that this is not good - but I wonder how many PCs (or cameras) get nicked from Barclays or M&S or The Heart Foundation or The Sun*? Make no bones about it, it seems that if an opportuntist can make a few quid on the side, he probably will. The only difference is that The Sun keeps quiet about their losses and makes as much of a story from the NHS/Prison Service/MI6/MoD as it's not their back yard - and no one really gives a dam that a PC that monitors M&S knickers is on ebay.

How does an organisation that has 100's of 1000s of bits of IT really keep control of all of it? How much of the stuff that gets on to ebay is really THAT secret? Guess no one really wants to hear about that story?

The strange thing is, is may have been a Sun* reader that put the MI6 camera on ebay!

Plus point It's a Nikon
Minus point using a camera with cool in the name does not make cool spies.

:)

Special Branch officers took away the buyer's PC. That's a major disincentive to do the right thing. Especially for those who've been doing the wrong things, but also the self-employed, who often don't have an IT disaster plan.

They just don't seem to learn from their mistakes. Plus surely Special Branch would use something better than a Coolpix? :p
