Another Beginner's Question Re Elements 5.0

Here we go again with the daft questions.

I want to put 2 photos together using layers, one is a fence post with a hole in it and want to put another photo behind it, sort of looking at the photo through the hole in the fence post. Is that possible and how do I do it? I am driving myself mad trying to work it out!

the fence post picture needs to be on the top layer and then you need to cut out the hole so you can see the background layer.
open up the "background image" then open the fence post image and drag the fence post image onto the back ground image to create a new layer and erase the hole hope this makes sense, if not let me know

I am a total beginner with this ... I can't even get 2 different images open at the same time, I need it in idiots language :(

I have opened the image i want inside the fence post hole, how do I open the fence image as well? Can't seem to find a way of doing it!

No :( When I go to File / Open and open the fencepost image, the first image (the one I want inside the fencepost) disappears and I only have the fence post image. I can't get them both open at the same time!
 
I can't see a tab at the top, no :(

When I open the second file (the fencepost) it becomes the background layer and the one i actually want as the background closes.

My screen doesn't look like that, it has a little panel to the right with 'Backround layer' in it, showing the image. When I open a new file then that becomes the background image. There are no tabs across the top like on yours, it just opens one image at a time.
 
Thank you for trying to help ... I want to learn how to do it myself tho.

I don't have a manual for the Elements 5 which is a b****r, I am waiting for a book from the library but until then I am pretty much thrashing about in the dark with it!
 
If you can't see tabs at the top, one for each image, look in the Window menu. You should see the two images listed at the bottom. Just click on each item to bring that photo to the top. The other will be hidden underneath.

The little panel to the right with 'Background layer' in it is the layers panel. You'll come to use this a lot as you use Elements more.

If you use Andrew's suggested method, you'll need to use the Erase tool which, as its name suggests, looks like an eraser.
 
Before you open the images, you have to highlight all the ones you want open at the same time, rather than opening one and then opening another. I think. It's a while since I tried PSE5!
 
Hey, thanks for your help with this. I found out that by going to 'File' then 'Place' I could manage to do this!
