Another basic question from me this morning.... Insurance?

No
I just toted up my camera gear... In excess of £2k, when you add it all together. Thinking should insure it when out, as there is no way I could afford £2k of replacements if something happened.... Knowing nothing about this, anyone got any advice on hobbyist international (worldwide) insurance?

Thanks

I insure my camera stuff on my house insurance 3k but will only pay up to 1k per single item

Snap, but you can name individual items of greater value ( my none named limit is £1700 per single item)

Mine pays 2.5k total, each item has to be less than 1.5k and I had to pay extra for personal possessions away from home otherwise they are only covered when they are in the house.
I have to have them in my possession or somewhere secure, so the boot of a car is OK but the back seat is not. I could add individual items over 1.5k and increase the total value if I paid more.

My house insurance will only go up to 1K per single item so that was no good when I got my 5D3 and Canon 70-200 f2.8 MkII. I had a look around for insurance companies and went with Photoguard in the end. I got £10K cover, no excess and travelling covered for around £300 a year. There are other companies, Aaduki for one, that offer similar cover though.

Mines the same as above 1k per item up to maximum of 2.5k however i also have a few items of greater value named like my Rolex so if the worst happened when out i am covered the extra items insurance is buttons i think i pay about £100/year on top of my standard insurance for £11,000 of declared items.

Hiscox home contents for me

Cover up to the amount insured for your contents and valuables, inclusive of accidental loss and damage, while they are in the home and whilst temporarily away from the home (for up to 60 days) - any where in the world and you only have to notify them if a single item is worth over £15,000.

Significant relevant exclusions:
- Loss of or damage over £2,500 from, in or on any unattended vehicle. We do not cover theft of any item from an unattended vehicle unless the item is hidden out of sight or in the vehicle’s locked glove compartment and violence and force are used to enter the vehicle.

Give you home insurance company a ring as all my gear is insured up to 2K as standard, and each item is classed as a seperate item, even though if say I dropped my camera with a lens attached and both broke then they are both covered separately.

In my book you are already paying one insurance why pay for another that does the same thing

Could these not have been put on it as itemized items. Like said mine covers each item up to 2K but had to get my Rolex valued as it was more.

oh mine is old for new as well

exactly and also the Rolex, love it :D

Super - thanks guys! I'll contact my insurer and see :-) One thing I was worried about is my work insurance, when travelling, only insures £1k of personal possessions. But if my house insurance covers whilst overseas, even better!

Does insurance cover you if you're out and you're mugged or threatened and hand it over to avoid violence, or if someone takes a dislike to you taking photos and smashes your camera? Never happened to me (touch wood), but with the popularity of street/urban photography it must happen fairly regularly.

Yep, if you ask them to

Mine's insured up to £6k, individual items of up to £2k don't need to be named

I have been with Aaduki for 2 or 3 years. Made a claim in Jan and they were excellent in dealing with it. Great service, and settled in 3 weeks (would have been half that if I hadnt waited a week to submit form and then dally on the replacements!! Strongly recommended.
