Looking for a spare camera.

Currently have a 30D and am thinking with ~250 to spend that I might well get another.

Though quite tempted by the compactness of the G9, but apparently not too good in the high ISO. More pixels similar money.

What do you reckon?

Hi Rich,

Which 'high ISO' would you be using?

I have a G9 and never use it beyond 400 and have had nothing but excellent results. But then, I'm not using any images printed on large paper.

With the G10 due out, the G9 prices have been tumbling. It may be worth while having a scout around for the best prices.

As Bobs say, as long as you don't go above 400 iso the G9 is a cracking wee camera - add a Lensmate, grip and thumbrest and it handles like a rangefinder, not a compact

I bought my husband a G9 - The pics have been really good. Clear and sharp and on a normal print size, looking as good as that from my 450D. Taught him about shooting in RAW too!

I have been known to dabble in the 1000s.

Though to be fair not that often.

I am leaning towards the G9 due to it's compactness.

Decisions decisions ???

We have a 5D and a G9. I bought the G9 for my other half for her birthday

Although the image quality's great (and being able to shoot in RAW puts it in another class completely compared with most point'n'shoot compacts), having a teeny sensor means massive depth-of-field. Although you can control everything on the G9 in manual mode, there's almost no point to it having selectable apertures as everthing is always in focus (unless you're taking shots very close to the camera)

This IMO is the biggest difference between using an SLR (even with a crop sensor) and a compact.

Amazon have 30% off the G9, I know because I nearly bought one last night lol. Need to save my pennies for India.

Why do you NEED 2 bodies. What is it that you are photographing that would require 2 bodies - REQUIRE, not like!

I have reorganised and gone back to one body.....it make me think and I haven't lost work as a result. I have just bought a G10, because of the compactness etc and RAW....some jobs I don't take an SLR, but the old S70 compact which did the job, was SO SLOW, the shutter lag was half a second at least.......hence the newer one (gone for the 10 over the 9, hummed and haaad for some time, because of the 28mm lens.) At £250 I would get the G9, and use it when you don't want to lug the SLR about, or when you don't want to be too conspicuous. Plenty of people using them for doorstepping shots!

Well I didn't use the term NEED. But I do a fair bit of sports photography where I currently have to swap lenses mid shoot, so another body would definitely be more convenient.

Also I've recently been invited as a 2nd photographer to do some weddings, and whilst I could borrow a camera as a backup in case my DSLR packs mid shoot I thought I might buy one.

In the past I've had a G7 and more recently a Ricoh and whilst I agree that the smaller size and inconspicuousness relative to a DSLR was good on a nice sunny day, they did not have the image quality when the light was low.
